COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - American Volleyball Coaches Association President Bonnie Kenny announced Monday that University of Houston Compliance Coordinator T.J. Meagher has been appointed to the AVCA Board of Directors as the Association's legislative representative.
"T.J. Meagher comes to the AVCA Board of Directors highly regarded," Kenny said. "This position is a very important component for all of our constituents and we look forward to having T.J. join our board of directors and keep us all up to speed on legislative issues for all of our coaches."
Meagher will hold the board position through Dec. 31, 2008. He replaces Sarah Weier, who has worked for the AVCA in a consultant role for the past year.
"It is an honor to serve on the AVCA Board, and I am proud to have this opportunity," Meagher said. "I look forward to contributing to this organization,s expounding future."
Meagher is in his fifth year at Houston and fourth season as its compliance coordinator. His primary responsibilities include applying $4.5 million in athletics aid to over 350 student-athletes annually, addressing issues of institutional and outside sources of financial aid and scholarships, and conducting compliance rules education sessions for coaching and non-coaching athletics staff.
Meagher also has an extensive volleyball coaching background. He has been involved at different times with Club Texas since 2001 while working at Houston. Meagher began his NCAA Division I volleyball coaching career in 1991 as an undergraduate assistant coach at the University of Kentucky while AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer was head coach at the institution. He transitioned to Morehead State University as an assistant coach in 1992 to work on his graduate degree, and returned to Kentucky in 1993 as an assistant coach. Meagher left Kentucky after the 1994 season and moved on to the University of Mississippi, where he served three seasons as an assistant coach through 1997. He served as head volleyball coach at Campbell University from 1998 to 1999.
Meagher, a Kentucky native, graduated from the University of Kentucky with a bachelor of science degree in accounting in 1992. He earned a master of business administration degree from Morehead State University in 1994.
