HOUSTON -- For the eighth consecutive year, members of Cougar Pride, the fundraising arm of Houston Athletics, have contributed a record amount of support with $7 million in donations to the Athletics general scholarship fund during the 2016-17 fiscal year. More than 4,300 Cougar Pride members helped top the previous record of $6.4 million set last fiscal year in the support of more than 400 student-athletes’ pursuit to become Champions for Life.
The record number does not include private donations to any capital campaigns or donations to sport-specific giving clubs.

“Year in and year out our Cougar Pride members play a vital role in reaching ambitious standards for the Houston Department of Athletics as we continue to build Champions for Life,” Houston Vice President for Athletics Hunter Yurachek said. “Our support base continues to grow and those that already count themselves as proud supporters continue to raise the standard in supporting the championship levels for which we strive. We will always push to reach the highest level of competition, and our Cougar Pride members are an integral part of that push. As we continue to grow, we challenge our current members and our supporters who have not yet joined Cougar Pride to help us accomplish impressive feats together.”
The $7-million year gives Cougar Pride an increase of $5.3 million in annual funds raised since $1.7 million was collected in 2009.
Cougar Pride’s mission is to provide financial support for student-athlete scholarships and priority needs of the Department of Athletics. Cougar Pride members consist of alumni, fans, former student-athletes, coaches and friends that work to ensure student-athletes have a first-class education with a chance to excel in the classroom and in competition.
The annual cost per full scholarship to educate these men and women for the 2017-18 year is more than $30,000 and on the rise. Cougar Pride's long-term goal is to fully fund all Houston student-athlete scholarships on an annual basis.
