BASEBALL
Notes
Houston Baseball was named The American preseason favorite, while junior ace Trey Cumbie, who was named a Preseason Second-Team All-American on Dec. 18, was named the Preseason Pitcher of the Year … In 2017, Houston, led by eighth-year Head Coach Todd Whitting, finished ranked among the nation's Top 25 after capturing both conference championship titles and hosting a sold-out NCAA Regional at Schroeder Park for the second time in the last three seasons … The Cougars notched their third 40-win season in the last four years and became the first Houston team to win a regular-season conference title and a conference tournament title in the same season since 2000 … Last season also marked the first year in program history that Houston had a conference Player and Pitcher of the Year in the same season as Cumbie (Pitcher) joined Jake Scheiner (Player) with those honors … Last season, Cumbie led the conference with a 2.04 ERA and a 10-2 record in 15 starts … The southpaw fanned 82 in 101.1 innings and had four complete games.

Senior guard Rob Gray led Houston with 24 points … Gray’s 24 points marked his seventh time to score 20-points or more on the season … For his effort, Gray was named the Hall of Fame Holiday Showcase Most Valuable Player as well as The American Weekly Honor Roll … Junior point guard Galen Robinson Jr. posted 12 points with a game-high six assists, while Armani Brooks netted 12 points and four 3-pointers off the bench … Corey Davis Jr. also eclipsed double figures with 10 points … As the former Hofheinz Pavilion is transformed into the $60-million Fertitta Center, the Cougars will play their 2017-18 home games inside Health & PE Arena on the campus of nearby Texas Southern University.


WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Against UIW, sophomore guard Jasmyne Harris led the Cougars with a game-high 26 points … Harris was one of five to score in double figures, joined by Octavia Barnes (14), Mynah West (13), Dorian Branch (11) and Angela Harris (11) … The 98 points are the most scored in a single game by the Cougars since 2009 … Trailing by one against George Mason, Houston used a late 10-0 run in the final minutes of the contest to come from behind for a 82-73 victory … Four Cougars scored in double figures, including Serithia Hawkins, who tallied her second double-double of the season and 13th of her career with 18 points and 14 rebounds … Angela Harris (18), Jasmyne Harris (15) and Octavia Barnes (13) also scored in double figures … For her efforts, Jasmyne Harris was named to The American Weekly Honor Roll.


FOOTBALL

Houston Football fell to Fresno State, 33-27, in the Hawai’i Bowl to close its season with a 7-5 record … With 269 yards passing, sophomore quarterback D'Eriq King (1,260) joined senior quarterback Kyle Postma (1,125) in passing for over 1,000 yards on the season … Houston finished with two 1,000 yards passers in the same season for the first time since Case Keenum (2,259) and Blake Joseph (1,324) each passed the millennium mark in 2007 … Junior cornerback Alexander Myres returned a blocked field goal 94 yards for a touchdown at the 2:54 mark in the third quarter … The score was Houston's first touchdown on special teams in 2017 and first blocked field goal returned for a touchdown since Brandon Wilson returned one 78 yards at UTSA on Sept. 28, 2013 … The 94-yard touchdown is the longest blocked field return in program history … Consensus All-American and Outland Trophy winner, sophomore defensive end Ed Oliver recorded a pair of tackles for loss in the game including one on Fresno State's second play from scrimmage … The pair give Oliver 39.5 for his career in only 25 games … Oliver recorded his first career touchdown with a one-yard rushing score at the 11:35 mark in the first quarter … Steven Dunbar finished with 197 yards receiving on 10 catches … The 197 yards were a career high, while 10 receptions tie his career high … The 100-yard receiving game was Dunbar's fourth of the season and seventh overall of his career … Dunbar finishes 14th on the Houston 100-yard receiving games chart … The Hawai’i Bowl marked Houston’s 26th appearance in a bowl game … For full postgame notes, click here … Houston signed 21 in the early signing period … For the full class, click here.


WOMEN'S GOLF
Notes
Fans are invited to join the nationally ranked Houston Women's Golf team's annual fundraiser, slated to begin at 3 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 14 … The fun-filled event will be held at Topgolf Spring (560 Spring Park Center Blvd., Spring, TX 77373) … All proceeds from the event benefit the Houston Women's Golf program … Head Coach Gerrod Chadwell, Associate Head Coach Lucy Nunn and student-athletes will be on hand to participate with fans … Tickets are available for $175 per person or $700 per foursome with snacks, dinner, drinks and a gift provided for each player … Two-time LPGA Player of the Year Stacy Lewis Chadwell will be a special guest at the event … Participants will also enjoy a silent auction with a variety of prizes. Freshman forward Jazmin Grant has been called up for the U-20 Jamaican National Team camp Dec. 27-Jan. 3 in Orlando, Fla. … In 2017, Grant finished second on the team in goals (5), assists (5) and points (15) … She was named to The American All-Rookie Team at the conclusion of the regular season.

Notes
Highlighted by 31 games and four host tournaments at Cougar Softball Stadium, Houston Softball and Head Coach Kristin Vesely announced the release of the 2018 schedule on Tuesday … The 55-game slate features seven teams who advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2017, including Women's College World Series participants Oregon and Texas A&M … For the full schedule release, click here.
