Richard W. Scamell, Professor of Management Information Systems in the C.T. Bauer College of Business, has been the University of Houston Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) to the NCAA and Conference USA since November, 1995. Included among his responsibilities is service as:
The University of Houston's certifying officer of academic and overall eligibility in accordance with NCAA and Conference USA requirements,
A representative of the University of Houston as appropriate on various committees within the governance structure of the NCAA and Conference USA,
A liaison, when necessary and appropriate, between coaches and/or student-athletes and University of Houston faculty members regarding academic issues, and
Chair and chief report writer for NCAA Self-Studies,
Scamell has a B.A., M.B.A. and Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Austin where as an undergraduate student he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Professor Scamell has taught more than two dozen different courses at the undergraduate, MBA, and doctoral levels. He has received two University of Houston Teaching Excellence Awards, ten Bauer College Excellence in Teaching Awards, and several Bauer College Excellence in Service Awards. He is the co-author of the book Data Modeling and Database Design and has published numerous papers in the fields of management information systems and operations research.
In addition to his role in the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, Scamell currently serves as Chair of the Academic and Policies Committee of the Undergraduate Council and participates in the Achieving the Dream Initiative and in the University Admissions Review Task Force.
