Cougars Crush Columbia, Take Series

HOUSTON – Houston Baseball's bats put up crooked numbers in four different innings to back a strong start from Jaycob Deese as the Cougars secured the series against Columbia with a 12-3 win in the finale Sunday afternoon from Sanders Field at Schroeder Park.

After scoring 10 runs in Saturday's middle game, the Cougars (13-7) erupted for three runs in the second, three more in the third, four in the fifth and two in the sixth on Sunday. Houston freshman Malachi Lott spearheaded the outburst, finishing 2 for 4 with four RBIs.

Deese (1-1) was elusive, limiting Columbia (5-10) to five hits and two runs across 6.0 innings to earn his first win of the season. The right-hander fanned five and allowed three walks. Deese limited the Lions to 1-for-7 (.143) with two outs.

Lott stretched Houston's advantage to 9-0 in the fifth, clearing the bases on a three-run single to plate Alex Lopez (single), Anthony Tulimero (single) and Cameron Nickens (walk). The freshman started the scoring in the second courtesy of an RBI-single.

All nine Cougar starters reached base including eight with a hit. Zach Arnold (2), Alex Lopez (2), Ryan Hernandez (2), Tulimero (2) and Lott (2) all notched multi-hit performances. Houston hit .429 (6-for-14) with runners in scoring position while producing double-digit runs for a sixth time this season.

Columbia starter Billy Black (0-3) lasted just 2.0 innings, permitting six runs (five earned) on five hits. The Lions committed three errors. Houston closer Ben Sears locked up his fourth save, holding Columbia scoreless over its final 3.0 frames.

Houston heads north to face Sam Houston in the renewal of the Sanders Cup at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday from Don Sanders Stadium. The contest can be seen on ESPN+ and heard on The Varsity Network. The matchup is the first between the schools since 2019.
