Houston’s turnaround season closes in conference tournament title game
Â
With the win, East Carolina (42-18) runs its win streak to 18 games, the longest active streak in the country, and captures the league's automatic bid to the 2022 NCAA Baseball Championship. The Pirates were led by cleanup hitter Jackson Cowart-Jenkins (2 for 4, RBIs) who was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
Â
The No. 3 seed Cougars (37-24) registered an 18-game turnaround in the win column from 2021 and set new program bests in the American Championship for home runs (9) and hits (61). Houston advanced to the title game by defeating No. 2 seed UCF, 9-6 on Saturday night after the Knights outlasted the Cougars in a 10-inning contest earlier in the day.
Â
The Cougars were well represented on the American Baseball Championship All-Tournament Team with junior reliever José Torrealba, senior first baseman Ryan Hernandez, redshirt sophomore catcher Anthony Tulimero and graduate designated hitter Santiago Garcia securing honors.
Â
Houston junior starter Logan Clayton (7-4) lasted 1.0 innings, allowing three hits and three runs. Cowart-Jenkins provided the major damage, launching a three-run home run into the left field bleachers. It was the right fielder's third home run at the championship.
Â
The Pirates tacked on three more runs in the third courtesy of a Cowart-Jenkins' RBI-single and sophomore Jacob Starling two-out, two-run double. East Carolina batted .357 (5 for 14) with runners aboard and .500 (4 for 8) with runners in scoring position.Â
Â
East Carolina sophomore starter C.J. Mayhue tossed 3.0 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk with three strikeouts. The Pirates held Houston's high-octane offense to six hits.
Â
The Cougars were led by offensively by freshman Cameron Nickens who registered his second three-hit game and drove in redshirt junior Ian McMillan (double) in the seventh. Houston junior reliever Ben Sears tossed 2.2 hitless frames, striking out three.
