Wilkey tosses five-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts to earn the win
HOUSTON – The University of Houston softball team outlasted Delaware to close out the Houston Invitational with a 1-0 victory on Sunday at the Cougar Softball Stadium.Â
Â
Graduate Kenna Wilkey tossed a complete-game shutout to put Houston (3-2) back above .500 on the season. The Braidwood, Ill., native threw 11 strikeouts without allowing a single walk against the Blue Hens. It marked the first Cougar pitcher to toss 11 strikeouts in a game since Savannah Heebner threw 12 against Texas Southern in 2018.Â
Â
On offense, Bree Cantu tallied the game-winning RBI, while Katy Repa scored the lone run in the contest. LA Matthews kept swinging a hot bat, going 2-for-3 on the afternoon.
Â
Pitchers battled in the circle for most of the contest. Despite Delaware getting an extra base hit in the second and sixth innings, Kenna Wilkey and the Houston defense was able to keep the Blue Hens off the scoreboard through six.
Â
The Cougars broke the stalemate in the sixth. Repa, pinch hitting for Amanda Carden, doubled to right to put a runner in scoring position with no outs. Paige Hulsey laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Repa to third, and Cantu, missing a home run by a few feet, drove Repa home with a sac-fly to put Houston up 1-0 after six innings.Â
Â
Wilkey, looking for her second victory of the young season, sat down three Delaware hitters with strikeouts in the seventh to seal the win for Houston.Â
Â
