Softball Splits Results to Open Houston Classic

After a tough loss to #12/14 Washington, the Cougars bounce back behind a complete-game shutout from Taylor Edwards
HOUSTON – The University of Houston softball team opened the Houston Classic by splitting a doubleheader, falling late to #12/14 Washington, 6-3, before rallying to defeat Morgan State, 5-0 on Friday from the Cougar Softball Complex.

Junior Taylor Edwards spun her first career complete-game shutout for Houston (4-3) in Game 2, earning her second win of the season. The Marrero, La., native tossed a two-hitter while striking out seven and only allowing one walk.Â
Â
Senior Bree Cantu and sophomore Turiya Coleman powered Houston at the plate, each grabbing a home run on the afternoon. Coleman finished the day 3-for-6 at the plate, adding two runs and two RBI, while Cantu finished 2-for-4 with a pair of walks.Â
Coleman, Cantu, and Hulsey have each reached base in all seven games so far this season, while Repa leads the team with a four-game hitting streak.Â

GAME ONE - #12/14 WASHINGTON 6, HOUSTON 3
The Cougars jumped out to an early lead and led for most of the game in their first battle against a ranked opponent this season.Â
Â
Cantu got Houston's offense going early, hitting the Cougars' first home run of the season with a two-run blast to left field to put Houston up 2-0 after two. Washington evened the score in the top of the third on a two-run single.Â
Â
Mattison Boyd pitched a strong start for the Cougars, tossing five innings and allowing only two unearned runs in her first start of the season.Â
Â
Houston reestablished a 3-2 lead in the fourth as Brooke Lorenzo drove home Paige Hulsey on a single through the right side.Â
Â
After a scoreless fifth, Washington used a three-run sixth to take the lead for the first time in the ballgame and added another run in the seventh to earn a 6-3 win.Â

GAME TWO – HOUSTON 5, MORGAN STATE 0
Similar to the first game of the day, the Cougars struck early to assert a lead. Coleman blasted her first home run of the year into the night sky, sending it over the right field fence to put Houston ahead, 1-0.Â
Â
Pitchers settled in following, keeping the score stagnant at 1-0. Houston nearly broke through in the fourth, putting a pair of runners in scoring position, but the inning ended before the Cougars could cash in.Â
Â
Houston would ultimately break the stalemate in the fifth. With runners on the corners, Ja'Naiya Thomas slipped a single through the right side to score Hulsey. Coleman followed it up in the next at bat with a base-knock to right that plated Lorenzo to put the Cougars up 3-0.  A pair of sacrifice flies off the bats of Katy Repa and Kati Ray Brown put Houston up 5-0 heading into the sixth.Â

Britaney Shaw ended the game a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, while Edwards moved to 2-0 on the season.Â
