
Softball Drops Pair in Doubleheader

Houston lost back-to-back games for the first time this season
HOUSTON – The University of Houston softball team dropped a pair of games on the third day of the Houston Tournament, falling 3-1 to Illinois and 4-3 to Pitt.

The Cougars (8-6) lost back-to-back games for the first time this season with the losses.Â
Â
Britaney Shaw hit her first home run of the season in the second game, while Turiya Coleman went 4-for-6 on the day with a pair of runs.Â
Â
Game One – Illinois 3, Houston 1
Illinois (8-5) struck early in the rematch of last night's game, plating a run in the second on an RBI single.Â
Â
The Fighting Illini scored another run in the fourth and sixth innings to take a three run lead. Houston attempted a rally in the seventh, with Coleman scoring on a Paige Hulsey double, but the comeback effort fell short as the Cougars lost, 3-1.Â

Coleman finished the game with three hits in three at bats and a run.Â

Game Two – Pitt 4, Houston 3
Houston jumped out to an early lead in the second game of the day. Turiya Coleman, after reaching on a fielder's choice, stole second and advanced to third on an error. After Husley reached on a walk, a double steal attempt succeeded, allowing Coleman to score, putting Houston ahead, 1-0.

The Cougars added another two runs in the fourth as Shaw hit her 15th career homer, a blast to center field.Â

Pitt (10-3) evened the score, plating two in the fifth and hitting a home run in the sixth to tie the game at 3-3. Houston nearly reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Bree Cantu was robbed of a home run by the Panthers' Bailey Drapola, who made a leaping grab at the fence to keep the game even.

The Panthers took the lead in the top of the seventh and the Cougars were unable to find a tying run, giving Pitt the 4-3 victory.
