Softball Earns Shutout Against Tarleton

Cougars cruise to 7-0 win behind combined shutout from Wilkey, Flores
STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The University of Houston softball team cruised to a 7-0 victory on Friday evening against Tarleton at the TSU Softball Complex.
Turiya Coleman led Houston (11-11) on offense, going 2 for 3 with two runs, two RBI, two stolen bases and a home run. Ja'Naiya Thomas also went 2 for 3 and added a run and a stolen base to her totals, while Katy Repa tallied a double with two RBI.
Kenna Wilkey tossed six shutout innings against Tarleton (13-12), allowing only two hits while striking out six to earn her sixth win of the season.
The Cougars jumped out to a quick lead, plating four runs in the top of the first. Coleman started the rally, lacing a single into left center then stealing second to reach scoring position. After Coleman advancing to third on a groundout and Bree Cantu walked to put runners on the corners, a double steal allowed Coleman to put the Cougars ahead, 1-0. Cantu later scored on an error, while Thomas and Britaney Shaw scored on a double by Repa to close out the frame.
Pitchers dueled after, with neither team finding the scoreboard again until Coleman sent a two-run home run over the left-center field wall to put Houston up 6-0 in the fifth inning.
Houston added another in the seventh, with Cantu driving home Bella Farina with a sacrifice fly.
Saleen Flores entered in relief for the Cougars in the seventh and completed the combined shutout to give Houston the 7-0 win.
