Houston’s Comeback Falls Short Against #21/#20 Baylor

WACO, Texas – The University of Houston softball team's comeback attempt fell short with #21/#20 Baylor earning an 8-5 win on Saturday afternoon at Getterman Stadium.

In her ninth start of the year, sophomore Taylor Edwards (3-5) earned the decision for Houston (12-15). Kaci West (4-1) tallied the win in the circle and Rylee Crandall earned her second save of the season for Baylor (21-5).

Turiya Coleman: 2-4, R, 2 RBI, 2B
Brooke Lorenzo: 3-3, R
LA Matthews: 2-3
Ja'Naiya Thomas: 1-2, 2 R, 2 BB

Game Highlights:

The Cougars tallied 10 hits, the seventh time the team reached a double-digit hit total this season.
Matthews extended her hitting streak to four games.
Thomas has reached in her last four games.
Matthews tallied her fourth multi-hit game of the season and 10^th of her career while Brooke Lorenzo recorded her third multi-hit game of the year.
Coleman posted her fifth multi-RBI game of the season.
Houston turned its 12^th double-play of the season in the first inning.

Key Innings
5^th | Down 5-0, Houston nearly closed the gap completely in the fifth. With the bases loaded, Coleman hit her ninth double of the season into left-center to drive home two. Immediately following, Britaney Shaw drew a walk to reload the bases and Hulsey was hit by a pitch to force another run home, making the score 5-3. The Cougars capped the inning with Coleman scoring on a Bree Cantu sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to one.

6^th | Baylor padded its lead in the sixth. Amber Toven hit a two-run homer to extend the Bears' advantage back to 8-4.

7^th | The Cougars kept fighting in the seventh. With runners on the corners, Shaw laced a single up the middle to score Thomas, making the score 8-5, but Crandall tallied back-to-back outs to seal the win for the Bears.

UP NEXT
Houston closes out the weekend series against Baylor at 1 p.m. Sunday. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
