Softball Drops Pair on Second Day at Sun Devil Classic

TEMPE, Ariz. – The University of Houston softball team dropped a pair of games on the second day of the Sun Devil Classic. The team lost to Michigan State, 8-5, before falling to Boise State, 5-2.

Paige Hulsey finished the day 2 for 6 at the plate with two runs and an RBI. Ja'Naiya Thomas hit her first career triple against Michigan State (7-10) while Wilkey threw her 32^nd career complete game against Boise State (8-9).

GAME ONE – MICHIGAN STATE 8, HOUSTON 5
Michigan State jumped ahead early, scoring on a sac fly in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.

The Spartans scored another in the third, two in the fourth, and one in the fifth to extend their lead to 5-0.

Houston bounced back in the sixth, stringing together a rally and scoring four runs on four hits and two walks to cut Michigan State's lead to 5-4. Bella Farina, Ja'Naiya Thomas, Paige Hulsey and Emma Robertson all scored for the Cougars in the inning, with Bree Cantu, Hulsey and Thomas tallying RBIs.

Michigan State responded in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs to extend their lead back to 8-4.

Houston's comeback ultimately fell short. Thomas tripled home Britaney Shaw early in the seventh inning, but the Cougars couldn't find the equalizer and lost, 8-5.

Thomas finished the game 2 for 2 with a triple and two RBIs, while Shaw ended the game 2 for 3 with a walk and a run.

GAME TWO – BOISE STATE 5, HOUSTON 2
Houston struck first in the second game. With runners on the corners in the bottom of the fist, Katy Repa singled through the right side to drive home Turiya Coleman and put Houston up, 1-0.

Boise State tied the game in the top of the second as Brooklynn Pettis hit a solo home run to left field.

Houston retook the lead in the bottom of the second. Coleman drove home her 10^th run of the season with a sac-fly to put the Cougars back in front, 2-1.

The Broncos took the lead in the fifth inning. Boise State capitalized on a pair of Houston errors to plate two unearned runs, taking a 3-2 lead.

Boise State used another error to tack on another pair of unearned runs in the seventh, earning a 5-2 win.

Wilkey tossed her sixth complete game of the season, allowing just one earned run in seven innings in the circle.

NOTABLES

Coleman has reached base safely in 19 of Houston's 20 games this season.
Shaw now has five multi-hit games this season and 16 in her career. Thomas now has six multi-hit games and 10 in her career. Brooke Lorenzo has two multi-hit games this season and in her career.
Hulsey is on a three-game hit streak.
Coleman stole her team-leading 10^th base of the year in game one.
