Interview
1. When did you start having an appreciation for community outreach?
My freshman year at U of H. I realized that it was not only fun to work with the kids but that it also made a difference. Community outreach has played a heavy role in my development as a student-athlete here at U of H.
2. What was your first community outreach experience at the U of H?
When I was a freshman I was asked to go to a YMCA and play with the kids. I was excited so I dressed up in my best clothes. I was met at the door by muddy sticky kids. After I finished rolling around and getting my clothes dirty; I realized that it is not always how you portray your self to be physically around the kids, but it is the substance and energy you give them that really counts.
3. What are you future plans with community outreach?
My dream is to one day be a professional athlete and have the opportunity to give back through sports as I have at the University of Houston. I want to have a youth foundation that supports disadvantaged youth.
4. What would you like to see change with the relationship between sports, athletes, and community outreach?
I would like to see more athletes give back to their surrounding communities. It is not always the money that counts. IT is the time and effort you give the next generation. My father has started a foundation back home called I survive which is designed to provide mentoring and sports instruction for the kids who do not have a positive influence at home.
5. What should your fans and friends know about Marquay Love that they cannot see on the field?
I am dependable, I work hard, and I am glued to my core spiritual values of treating others how you would like to be treated. The reason why you see me having so much fun on the field is because I want my positive energy to spread to my teammates, fans, family and most of all those kids who are having a once in a lifetime experience.
Marquay Love end quotes by saying: "Love for the kids is why I Love this game"
