HOUSTON – With three provisional marks, three personal records and five top performances in program history, the University of Houston track and field team held their own at the New Mexico Cherry and Silver Invitational on Saturday at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

Christie Jones earned her second consecutive provisional mark in the 60m dash, claiming a first-place victory with a time of 7.44. Jones was the first Cougar of the day to break into the record books, posting the fifth-best time in program history. Whitney Harris finished close behind in second place with a mark of 7.47.

For the men, Errol Nolan also finished in second place, clocking 6.76 – good for the fourth-best time in program history. Tyron Carrier set a personal record with a time of 6.83 to finish in fourth place, while Isaiah Sweeney placed eighth with a mark of 7.00.

Nolan continued his success, as he became the second Cougar of the day to earn both a provisional mark and post an all-time top-five performance. His time of 21.20 in the 200m ranks as the fifth-best mark in Houston history. Sweeney added a personal top performance with a time of 21.32 to finish in third place, while Carrier finished in fifth with a time of 21.74.

Chris Carter also earned a provisional mark in the triple jump with a leap of 15.87m (52-01.00) to finish first among college competitors. Lamar Delaney followed with a third-place finish, recording 15.35m (50-04.50). For the women, Quin’shundolyn McPherson notched a first-place victory with a distance of 12.35m (40-06.25). Nadirah Shakir finished in fourth place with a mark of 11.93m (39-01.75). Alaysha Ford made her season debut with a seventh-place finish, jumping 11.38m (37-04.00).

Kalyn Floyd won her first event of the season in her 400m debut, clocking 54.50. Her time went into the record books as the third-best mark in Houston history. Also appearing in the race for the first time, Tara Prier followed in sixth place with a time of 56.95. On the men’s side, Douglas Kelley placed third, running 48.37, and Joseph Irabor crossed the finish line at the 49.36 mark.

The men’s 4x400m relay team, consisting of Nolan, D’Korian Ford, Irabor and Kelley, finished first with a time of 3:13.99, while the women – Harris, Prier, Alysha Cook and Floyd – placed second, clocking 3:46.45.

Cameron LaCour made his Cougar debut in the 60m hurdles, notching a second-place finish with a time of 8:20. Olivia Amy came in seventh despite a season-best performance of 8.86 in the prelims.

Miles Beal-Ampah finished third in the high jump with a mark of 2.04m (6-08.25), while Selleck Keene tied his personal record with a height of 1.99m (6-06.25). On the women’s side, Megan Frausto tied for fifth place, eclipsing the bar at 1.68m (5-06.00).

Tai’shea Reese recorded a season-best 5.95m (19-06.25) in the long jump to finish in fifth place.

Also finishing in fifth place, Matt Dudley recorded 15.80m (51-10.00) in the shot put. Teonor Davilmar placed sixth with a launch of 15.67m (51-05.00). Mike Sanchez followed in seventh place with a distance of 15.49m (50-10.00). On the women’s side, Kiara Pulliam threw a season-best of 13.91m (45-07.25) to place sixth. Charlissa Foster recorded 13.71m (44-11.75) before pulling out of the event due to injury.

Rick Fenton finished sixth in the men’s weight throw with a toss of 15.61m (51-02.75). His feat landed him the fourth best performance in program history. This is the third time this season Fenton has made a mark in the all-time top-five performance list.

Up Next for the Cougars
Houston returns home on Jan. 29-30 for the Houston Indoor Opener before traveling to New York, N.Y., for the New Balance Invitational on Feb. 5-6.
