Cougar Distance Opens Charlie Thomas Invitational

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Houston Cougar Men’s and Women’s distance teams were in action on Friday to open the Charlie Thomas Invitational, hosted by Texas A&M. Action concludes at the invitational beginning at 10:30 a.m., Saturday.

Meet Information

Houston had just four student-athletes in action on the first day of the Charlie Thomas Invitational. In the men’s 5,000-meter race, freshman Chris Wallace ran his first ever sub-15 5K en route to placing third in the event. Wallace crossed the line in a personal best 14:57.45.

In the women’s version of the race, sophomore Emely Morgado was the first to cross for Houston. The Pasadena, Texas, native finished the race in a personal-best 18:17.70 to place 11th. Junior Maria Gonzales finished the 5K in 19:07.86 to run 13th, while sophomore Kristin Powell crossed in 14th at 19:15.14.

Sophomore Amere Lattin returns to action in the 60-meter hurdles on Saturday. Lattin enters the competition with the No. 16 mark in the nation in the event this season with a personal best of 7.85.

In the sprints, senior Tori Williams will make her return to the track in the 200-meter dash. Williams has the nation’s 30th best time this season at 23.80, which she clocked at the Mark Colligan Memorial in mid-January.



Three of Houston’s long jumpers will be in action, carrying with them some of the top marks in the NCAA this season. On the women’s side, freshman Samiyah Samuels enters the meet with the No. 27 mark in the nation this season after jumping 19-11.5 (6.08m) a week ago at the Houston Invitational. For the men, Trumaine Jefferson and Antwan Dickerson look to continue their strong seasons after each set personal bests last week. Jefferson enters with a top mark of 25-2.0 (7.67m, No. 14 NCAA) and Dickerson’s best is 24-4.25 (7.42m, No. 46 NCAA).
