Houston Men Take First, Women Place Fifth in Houston Invitational

The University the Houston hosted the Houston Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 7) at the Yeoman Field House inside the Athletics/Alumni Center with the Cougar men taking first place and the women placing fifth as Houston captured four events.
Among the schools competing in the meet included Texas, Rice, Texas State, New Mexico, Texas A&M, UT-Arlington, Texas Southern, McNeese State, Stephen F. Austin, North Texas, Northwestern State, Lamar, Sam Houston State, UT-San Antonio, UT-Pan American, Southern (Baton Rouge), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Prairie View A&M and fellow Conference USA schools Southern Miss and TCU.
Houston All-American Stanford Routt, who ran provisional-qualifying marks in both the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes in the Leonard Hilton Memorial meet on Jan. 23 and was named Conference USA Athlete of the Week for Jan. 25, captured the men's 60-meter race with a season and personal-best finish of 6.65 seconds. With the race, he has set provisional NCAA-qualifying marks in each of the three races he has competed in this 2004 indoor season.
After the 60-meter race, Perry took first place in the men's 200-meter dash with a personal-best mark of 21.29 seconds.
The Houston men's 4x400 relay team shaved nearly a full second off their time in Jan. 23's Leonard Hilton Memorial and placed second with a season-best time of 3:16.58.
Houston junior Shayla Bowman captured her second-straight weight throw event with a best of 16.77 meters (55-00.75 ft.) in the women's weight throw. She also took the event in the Leonard Hilton Memorial on Jan. 23. Following Bowman for the Cougars, and earning points for the Cougars, was Allie Booker, who took third with a throw of 16.07 meters (52-08.75 ft.) and Laura Yelverton (13.92 meters/45-08.00 ft.).
Houston's distance medley relay team of sophomore Sesar Figueroa, Sam Fobbs, Alex Wnstel and Cole Dailey took second in the event with a finish time of 10:17.49.
Other Cougars who capped off stellar performances include Figueroa, who finished in second place and set a new personal best by five seconds in the men's mile with a finish time of 4:11.78. In addition, freshman Johnathan Reeves set a personal-best mark in the men's shot put with a throw of 17.63 meters (57-10.25 ft.).
For the Lady Cougars, Caresir Hamilton took third in the women's triple jump with a Cougar season-best jump of 12.12 meters (39-09.25 ft.). Jason Edwards took sixth in the long jump (7.22 meters/23-08.25 ft.).
The meet was the third of four indoor meets that Houston hosts this season. The Cougars host the UH/RunSport All-Comers meet at the Yeoman Field House on Feb. 14 with field events getting underway at 9:00am. The Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships will also be held at the Yeoman Field House from Feb. 27-28.
