Barraza Breaks 3,000m School Record

HOUSTON - Senior distance runner Brian Barraza broke his own record in the 3,000-meter dash as the Houston Cougar Men’s and Women’s Track & Field teams wrapped up the final day of competition at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., and the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash.

For the second-straight night, a Cougar distance runner broke their own school record in an event. Barraza’s time of 7:53.60 was good enough for a second place finish in the 3K and breaks his previous best of 7:59.66 set on Feb. 13, 2016 at last season’s Husky Classic. Barraza’s mark ranks him No. 7 on the NCAA list according to TFRRS.org,

Barraza’s record-setting performance followed Selena Sierra’s from Friday night, where she ran 17:00.35 in the 5,000-meters to break her previous record in the event by over 14 seconds.

Houston had just a handful of athletes in action on the second day of the Tyson Invitational.

On the track, senior Tori Williams picked up Houston’s highest individual finish, placing fourth in the 200-meter dash. The defending American Conference Track Athlete of the Week crossed the line in 23.60, just one-one hundredth of a second off her season best.

Two Cougars were in action in the men’s edition of the 200. Curtis Brown finished in 21.64 to place 17th, while Jacarias Martin clocked a 21.66 to finish 19th.

Junior Tonye’cia Burks tallied a top-5 finish in the women’s triple jump with a top mark of 40-6.25 (12.35m). Burks qualified for the finals with a mark of 40-4.75 (12.31m) before moving from seventh to fifth with her final jump. In the men’s triple jump, Cameron Prejean finished 16th with a top leap of 46-5.5 (14.16m).



The Cougars wrapped competition at the Tyson with each of their men’s and women’s teams competing in the 4x400-meter relay. The women finished the 1600-meter relay in fourth place with a time of 3:38.54, while the men placed sixth in 3:09.95. The women’s time moves the team to 29th in the NCAA this season, while the men’s mark sits 45th.
