The University the Houston hosted the annual UH/RunSport All-Comers meet on Saturday (Feb. 14) at the Yeoman Field House inside the Athletics/Alumni Center, with most of the members of the Cougar team competing in the Razorback/Tyson Invitational hosted by Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark.

Among the colleges competing in the UH/RunSport meet, which also featured various state-wide track clubs and high school teams, were Prairie View A&M, Southern (Baton Rouge), Lamar, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Sam Houston State, UT-Pan American, Louisiana Tech, Huston-Tillotson, Southwestern Christian, Texas Lutheran and the University of New Orleans.

For the Cougars who did compete, distance runner Maurilio Sanchez posted a personal best in the men's 5000m race, finishing second among the field with a finish time of 15:37.46. Sprinter Michael Francis placed 14th in the men's 400m with a time of 50.80 seconds.

Ashley George finished in fifth place in the women's long jump with a season-best jump of 5.61 meters (18-05.00 ft.), while freshman thrower Laura Yelverton posted season bests in both the weight throw (14.05 meters/46-01.25 ft.) and shot put (11.93 meters/39-01.75 ft.), finishing fourth and fourteenth, respectively. Distance runner Cynthia Silva also posted a season best in her event, the mile, placing 17th with a time of 5:34.59.

Cougars who placed among the top ten in their respective events at the Razorback/Tyson Meet in Arkansas included Tinisha Wesley, who finished in second in the women's shot put with a throw of 13.89 meters (45-07.00 ft.), Stanford Routt, who placed eighth in the men's 60-meter dash in 6.77 seconds, Johnathon Reeves, who placed fourth in the men's shot put (127.20 meters/56-05.25 ft.), Caresir Hamilton, who jumped 1.70 meters (5-07.00 ft.) in the high jump to place sixth and the women's 4x400-meter relay team, which placed sixth with a time of 3:44.03.

 

 

Houston hosts the 2004 Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Yeoman Field House from Feb. 27-28.
