March 15, 2012
Ft. Worth, TX - The University of Houston track and field teams close out day one of the TCU Invitational at the Lowden Track Complex in Ft. Worth, Texas, on Thursday. Today showcased the men's and women's hammer, discus and javelin throws. Houston had five competitors today, John Fortune was the lone representative for the men, while Nicole Benton, Emily Nnokwam, Samantha Taylor and Morgan Swan competed for the women's team. Benton was the top performer for the women on Thursday as she earned fourth place in the discus throw and placed fifth in the hammer throw, achieving new personal bests in both events. In addition, Emily Nnokwam and Morgan Swan placed seventh and ninth, respectively, in the hammer throw. John Fortune took third in the men's hammer throw with his toss of 163-10, as he set a new personal record in the event. "I'm very pleased with today's results," throwing coach Will Blackburn said. "Nicole was able to set personal records in the hammer and the discus and John had a personal best in the hammer. It's very early in the season and to be able to come out and set personal records without very much practice is pleasing. We have a lot of room to grow." UP NEXT
