Lady Cougars Tied For Second Place, Cougars in Third Place After First Day of Events At Tellez Invitational

Houston, Texas - The University of Houston women's track and field team is in a second-place tie after the first day of the Tom Tellez Invitational at UH's Lewis/Tellez Track Complex. The Lady Cougars are tied with Sam Houston State with 27 points through the first four events. Texas A&M is the top women's team in the university division with 50 points. Jasmine Jackson and Caresir Hamilton combined to score 12 points for the Lady Cougars in the women's long jump. Jackson finished in second place with a leap of 19' 6 3/4" (5.75 meters) to score eight points, and Hamilton had a fifth-place finish with a jump of 18'-7 3/4" (5.68 meters) for the other four points. Laura Harlett also scored eight points in the women's 5,000-meter run with a third-place finishing time of 19:15.52. Tinisha Wesley scored a combined seven points in the women's shot put and discus throw. Wesley finished third in the shot put with a mark of 44' 8 1/4" (13.62 meters) and had a ninth-place throw in the discus with 113'4" (34.54 meters). Houston is in third place through the first day in the men's university division behind Texas A&M and Sam Houston State. The Aggies are in first place with 42 points, while the Bearkats have 26 points and Houston has 24 points. Brandon Bray scored 10 points for the Cougars when he won the men's long jump with a leap of 23' 10" (7.26 meters). Nicholas Garza scored another point with an eighth-place finish after jumping 21' 4" (6.50 meters). Jonathan Reeves and Maurilio Sanchez tallied six points each for the Cougars after third place finishes in the shot put and 5,000-meter run, respectively. Reeves had a mark of 53-feet in the shot put, while Sanchez had a time of 16:16.48 in the men's 5,000-meter run.
Jarrett Flax scored Houston's other point with an eighth-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 169-feet (51.52 meters). In the high school divisions, Alief Elsik is the girl's leader with 51.50 points through six events. Kingwood is in second place with 41 points and Cinco Ranch is in third place with 40 points. Cinco Ranch is the top boy's team with 68.50 points, while Tomball is in second place with 39 points. Kingwood stands in third place with 32.50 points and Westfield is the fourth-place team with 27 points. The Tellez Invitational concludes with High School and University Divisions on Saturday, March 26. The second day begins with the men's and women's hammer throws at 9:00 a.m., and the discus throws at 11:00 a.m. The running events begin at noon. The Tom Tellez Invitational is one of three track and field meets hosted by Houston. The second is the Houston Invitation on May 7 and the last one is the Conference USA Outdoor Championships on May 12-14. |
