Lady Cougars Win Team Title At Tom Tellez Invitational Track and Field Meet

Houston, Texas - The University of Houston women's track and field team scored 151 team points to win the University Division Championship after the second day of the UH Tom Tellez Invitational Saturday afternoon. Senior Alicia Cave won 100-meter hurdles and was the top collegiate performer in the 400-meter hurdles to lead the Lady Cougars. Caresir Hamilton also won the women's triple jump and Houston won both relays. Cave had a time of 13.71 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles to edge Funmi Jimoh of Rice by 22/100ths of a second. Meka-Rembert-Thompson of Sheffield Elite won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 58.17 seconds, while Cave had the best collegiate time with 59.22 seconds. Houston's Tiffany Abney also had a time of 60.42 seconds to finish in third place. Hamilton won the women's triple jump with a wind-aided leap of 41'5", while Houston won the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 45.06 seconds and the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:44.77. Carey LaCour won the men's 200-meter dash and Brandon Bray was the top collegiate performer in the men's long jump to lead Houston to a third-place team finish in the men's division with 120 team points. Texas A&M won the men's title with a score of 183 points and Sam Houston scored 122 team points for second place. LaCour won the 200-meter race with a wind-aided time of 20.73 seconds. Former Cougar Jason Edwards won the men's long jump while competing unattached with a leap of 24' 5 ¾". Bray was the runner-up with a jump of 23'10". The Lady Cougars also had second place finishes in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and long jump. LaDedra Guy was the runner-up in both the 100-meter and 200-meter races behind Tremedia Brice of Texas Southern. Guy had a time of 12.04 seconds in the 100-meters, while Brice won the race with a time of 11.61 seconds. In the 200-meter race, Brice won with a time of 22.84 seconds, while Guy had a time of 24.19 seconds to edger her teammate Keisha Howard, who had a time of 24.47 seconds.
In the long jump, Jasmine Jackson had a leap of 19'6¾" and was the runner-up in the long jump behind Jimoh, who won the event with a jump of 19'10¼". Houston's Tinisha Wesley and Allie Booker also had third-place finishes in two throwing events. Wesley had a mark of 44'8 ¼" in the shot put and Booker threw the discus 150'10". The Cougars also had four second-place finishes in the men's division. Preston Perry was the runner-up in the 100-meter days with a wind-aided time of 10.33 seconds. Alex Winstel had a second-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:54.32 and Sesar Figueroa was the runner-up in the 1500-meter run with a time of 3:54.34. Sophomore Tristian Whitley also cleared seven-feet in the high jump for the first time this season with a mark of 7' ½". Marcus Harris of Texas Southern won the high jump after clearing 7'2½". Conference USA indoor champion Tom Rusteberg cleared 16' ¾" in the pole vault to finish in third place, while Jonathan Reeves had a third-place finish in the shot put with a mark of 53-feet. Jeremy Ruben also had a third-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.75 seconds. Houston also was the second-best collegiate team in the men's 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:13.65. The Cougars finished behind Texas A&M, who had a time of 3:10.89. |
