Houston, Texas- - Senior Cole Dailey won the men's 100-meter run and fellow senior Alex Winstel registered a fifth-place finish in the men's steeplechase to lead the University of Houston men's track and field team on the first day of the Rice University Bayou Classic.

Dailey won the 10,000-meter race with a career-best time of 31:09.43. Dailey's previous best time came at the 2004 Conference USA Outdoor Championships when he finished in 10th place with a time of 33:15.51. Dailey was joined in the race at Rice by freshman Ben Cohen had a time of 34:04.23 to finish in eighth place.

Winstel completed the steeplechase course in 9:38.90 while competing in the first steeplechase race of his collegiate career.

Sesar Figueroa also had a seventh-place finish in the men's 5,000-meter race with a time of 15:03.76. He was also running in his first 5,000-meter race this season and first since he registered a seventh-place finish at the 2003 Conference USA Championships.

Freshman Oumama Hallal was the top finisher for the Lady Cougars as she had the eighth-fastest time in the women's 1500-meter race with 4:48.69. She improved her previous career-best time by nearly four seconds after opening the outdoor season with a time of 4:52.21 at the Tom Tellez Invitational last Saturday.

Shawna Florida also registered a ninth-place finish in the women's steeplechase after completing the course in 11:58.57. It also was the first time Florida has competed in a steeplechase during her collegiate career.

Tinisha Wesley had an eighth-place finish in the women's javelin with a throw of 116' 10" (35.62 meters). It

Houston will continue competing in the Bayou Invitational on Saturday with running and most field events scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
