Cave and two relay teams advance to Finals of Texas Relays

In what might be a preview at the 2004 Conference USA Championships, Houston and TCU ran in the same heat against each other in the preliminaries of the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays at the Texas Relays. The two teams squared off in the third heat of the 400-meter relay when TCU edged the Lady Cougars. The Lady Frogs had a time of 45.26 seconds to win the third heat, while Houston was the runner-up in 45.55 seconds. Both teams qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships in College Station later this season. Junior Alicia Cave won the fourth heat of the women's 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.78, which qualifies her for the NCAA Regional Championships later this season. Jaketa West also had a time of 14.57 seconds in the hurdles to finish fourth in her heat. LaDedra Guy also won her heat in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.79 seconds. Guy just missed qualifying for the NCAA Regional meet by 1/100th of a second. Lisa Wilson also had a time of 12.18 seconds in the 100 meters. Jessie Oakes had a time of 12:11.07 in her first women's steeplechase of the season. Oakes returns after suffering a stress fracture in her foot during the 2003 cross country season. Houston's 1600-meter sprint medley relay tandem of Guy, Wilson, Jennifer Hunt and Crystal Freeman finished in seventh place with a time of 4:01.88. In the women's high jump Caresir Hamilton had a NCAA Regional mark when she cleared 5-8 (1.73 meters). In the women's shot put, Tinisha Wesley had a throw of 45-6.25 (13.87m).
In the men's 110-meter hurdles, Andrew Carruthers qualified for the NCAA Regional with a time of 14.30 seconds. Milton Manson had a time of 14.41 seconds in the event. In the 100-meter dash, Brandon Womack had a time of 10.78 seconds.
Houston qualified for Saturday's final in the men's 4x100-meter relay when the Cougars were the runner-up in the first heat with a time of 40.43 seconds. The time also qualified Houston for the NCAA Regional Championships. Houston also had a time of 3:12.33 in the 4x400-meter relay to finish fourth in the second heat. In the men's shot put, Jonathan Reeves had a ninth-place finish with a mark of 54-11.50 (16.75m). Lucas Mireles also had a throw of 48-10.25 (14.89m). Derek Randall finished in 10th place with a throw of 172-3 (52.03m) in the discus. Reeves and Randall qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships with their throws. |
