Ward Stands In Sixth Place Through First Four Events Of Heptathlon at Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays

Austin, Texas- - Former NCAA All-American Krystal Ward overcame a slow start and climbed back into contention in the women's heptathlon at the 78th annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on Wednesday afternoon. Competing in the heptathlon for the first time this season, Ward opened the first day with a time of 14.98 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles to score 844 points, which put her in 12th place. The leader through the first day, Diana Pickler of Washington State, had the best time in the hurdles with 13.74 seconds and that gave her 1,015 points. Ward made up a little ground in the high jump after clearing 1.72 meters (5' 7.75"). Pickler cleared 1.69 meters (5' 6.50") for 842 points. Her twin sister and teammate, Julie, tied Ward for the second highest leap. Deidra Wesley of North Texas had the best score in the high jump with 916 points after she cleared 1.75 meters (5' 8.75"). Ward also had the second longest shot put in the next event with a mark of 11.89 meters (39' 0.25") to score 654 points. Maret Komarova of BYU had the best shot put mark with 12.26 meters (40' 2.75"). Pickler only scored 574 points after a throw of 10.68 meters (35' 1/2") in the shot put. Pickler rebounded in the 200-meter dash, the final event of the first day, with the fastest time of 24.61 seconds to score 923 points. Ward had a time of 25.62 seconds and that gave her 831 points. Ward ended the afternoon with 3,208 points and that puts her in sixth place. Pickler is the overall leader through the first four events with 3,354 points. Jennifer Johnson of Texas A&M is in second place with 3,284 points. Pickler's twin sister and teammate, Julie, is in third place with 3,252 points, while Ryanne Dupree of Texas-San Antonio is in fourth place with 3,240 points and Wesley is in fifth place with 3,239 points. Houston's other heptathlete, Nichole Brundage, is in 16th place with 2,701 points. Brundage scored 819 points in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.17 seconds. She also tallied 736 points in the high jump after clearing 1.60 meters (5'3"). Her troubles came in the shot put when she netted just 414 points with a throw of only 8.23 meters (27'). She ended the first day with 732 points in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.76 seconds.
The final three events of the heptathlon are the long jump, javelin throw and 800-meter run. In the men's decathlon, Houston's Nicholas Garza stands in 11th place with 3,571 points and Ron Veillon is in 15th place with 3,378 points through the first five events. Trey Hardee of Texas is the leader with 4,127 points, and Donavan Kilmartin of Texas is in second place with 4,052 points. Will Thomas of Connecticut is in third place with 4,039 points. The final five events in the decathlon on Thursday include the 110-meter hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and 1500-meter run. Shawna Florida registered a season-best time of 4:48.54 in the women's 1500-meter section B race to finish in 12th place. Oumama Hallal finished in 14th place with a time of 4:52.52. Carlee Clark of Texas won the race with a time of 4:35.06, while Lisa Haglund of Texas-Arlington was the runner-up with a time of 4:37.71. |
