Austin, Texas- - Competing in her first heptathlon of the 2005 outdoor season, University of Houston senior All-American Krystal Ward in third place and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships after scoring 5,327 points at the Texas Relays on Wednesday and Thursday, April 6-7.

Ward began Thursday in sixth place after scoring 3,208 points in the first four events on Wednesday. She opened the second day scoring 657 points in the long jump after leaping 5.35 meters (17' 6.75"). Then, Ward added 662 more points in the javelin with a throw of 39.71 meters (130' 3"). Ward had her highest point total of any single event when she ended the day netting 800 points with a time of 2:21.75 in the 800-meter run.

Houston's Nichole Brundage also finished in 15th place with 4,514 points. Brundage, who began the day with 2,701 points through the first four events, tallied 686 points in the long jump with a leap of 5.45 meters (17' 10.75"). She also scored 391 points in the javelin with a throw of 25.45 meters (83' 6"). Brundage had a time of 2:26.57 in the 800-meter run for 736 points.

In the men's decathlon, Nicholas Garza had an 11th-place finish with 6.516 points. Garza began the day with 3,571 points and had a time of 16.11 in the 110-meter hurdles to score 720 points. He also scored 537 points in the discus with a throw of 33.67 meters (110' 5"), 659 points in the pole vault after clearing 4.15 meters (13-7.25). In the final two events, Garza netted 408 points in the javelin with a throw of 37.61 meters (123' 5") and 621 points in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:49.62.

Jennifer Hunt, Adriane Guinn, Shawna Florida, and Jennifer Harper combined for a seventh-place finish in the women's 4x800-meter relay with a time of 9:08.76. Arkansas won the race with a time of 8:38.03, while Stanford finished in second place with a time of 8:45.48 and Texas had a third-place showing with a time of 8:52.36.

 

 

Houston's tandem of Chris White, Andy Morris, Alex Winstel and Sesar Figueroa had a time of 7:37.90 and finished in 11th place in the men's 4x800-meter relay race.

Veronica Ramirez had an 11th-place finish in the women's 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:45.81. Mirriam Kaumba of Oklahoma Baptist won the race and set a Michael Myers stadium record with a time of 16:12.60.

Cougar freshman Scott Duckworth tied for 11th place in the B section of the men's pole vault after clearing the opening height of 4.90 meters (16' 0.75"). Seth Harris of Texas Tech won the section after clearing 5.20 meters (17' 0.75").

In the preliminary rounds of the women's 400-meter hurdles, Alicia Cave and Tiffany Abney qualified for Saturday's final. Cave won the second heat with her season-best time of 58.91 seconds. Abney was the runner-up in the first heat with her career-best time of 1:00.33. Melanie Walker of Texas won the first heat with the fastest preliminary time of 57.01 seconds.

In the men's preliminary rounds of the 400-meter hurdles, Houston's Sam Fobbs had a third-place finish in the fourth heat with a time of 52.63 seconds. Jeremy Ruben had a sixth-place showing in the first heat with a time of 54.92 seconds.

Michael Tinsley of Jackson State had the fastest time in the preliminaries after he won the fifth heat in 49.77 seconds.
