Reeves Wins Men's Shot Put and Figueroa Finishes Ninth in the 1500 Meters At The Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays

Austin, Texas - Jonathan Reeves won the "B section" of the men's shot put and had a fourth-place finish in the "B section" of the men's discus throw at the 59th Annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on Friday, April 7. Reeves won the discus easily as his throw of 59 feet, 7 inches (18.16 meters) was nearly a foot further than Ricky Jean-Francois of LSU mark of 58 feet, 8 inches. Later in the day, he had a throw of 175 feet, 5 inches (53.46 meters) in the discus. In addition to Reeves winning the shot put, Sesar Figueroa had a ninth-place finish in the men's 1500 meter run and Houston's men 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relay teams qualified for Saturday's finals. Figueroa had a career-best time of 3:47.44 in the 1500 meters, and his time qualified him for the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships. The 4x400-meter relay team consisting of Chris White, Kerry LaCour, Justin McQueen and Kolee Latson qualified for Friday night's final with the fastest overall time of 3:06.84. That is the nation's fifth-fastest time this season heading into the weekend. The 4x100-meter tandem of Preston Perry, Justin McQueen, Tremaine Smith and Carey LaCour won the third heat with a fourth- fastest overall time of 39.93 seconds. The Cougars edged Arizona State, who had a time of 39.96 seconds. Texas had the fastest overall time with 39.55 seconds, while UTEP posted a time of 39.71 seconds to win the first heat, and LUS had the third fastest time with 39.84 seconds. Those were the only four teams to run under 40 seconds in the preliminary heats.
Perry also qualified for the finals in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.46 seconds. He was the runner-up in the ninth heat behind Kelvin Love of Arizona State, who tied Kelly Willie of LSU for the second-fastest overall time with 10.46 seconds. LaCour won the seventh heat with a time of 10.65 seconds, but his time was not fast enough to make the final. The cutoff was 10.52 seconds. In the women's division, Houston's 4x100-meter relay team didn't finish their preliminary race, and the women's 4x400-meter relay team, LaDedra Guy and freshman hurdler Seun Adigun failed to advance to the finals. The women's 4x400-meter relay team of Keisha Howard, Guy, Cheryl Garner and Ebonie Floyd had a NCAA Midwest Regional qualifying time of 3:35.18 in the seventh heat, but finished with the 12th fastest overall time. Houston finished second in the heat behind Texas A&M, who had a time of 3:31.71. Guy had a time of 11.77 seconds in the fourth-heat of the women's 100-meter dash and that tied her for 17th place overall. Adigun also had a NCAA Midwest Regional qualifying time in the 100-meter hurdles after she finished with a time of 13.82 seconds in the third heat. Lee Andrea Robinson also had a time of 14.60 seconds in the fifth heat, and Alexis Rogers had a time of 14.15 seconds in the seventh heat. In the B Section of the women's high jump, Caresir Hamilton tied for 16th place after clearing 1.70 meters (5 feet, 7 inches). |
