HOUSTON – The Houston Cougar Men’s and Women’s Track & Field teams picked up a pair of victories on the final day of the Texas Invitational on Saturday at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cougars picked up their first win of the afternoon on the distance circuit, when Maria Gonzales took gold in the women’s 3,000-meter run. Gonzales finished the 7.5-lap race in a personal-best 10:31.50. Senior Mackenize Ilari took fifth in the event with a personal-best 10:55.87.
Devin Fahey would follow Gonzales’ performance with a win of his own in the men’s 3,000-meter run. Fahey surged ahead on the final lap of the race to finish in 8:40.94 and take the Texas Invitational gold. Chris Wallace finished fourth in 9:00.02, while Gabe Lara rounded out the top-5 in 9:05.38.
Houston opened individual track events in the 800-meter run, where the squad picked up their first top-5 finish of the afternoon, when Brianna Nolen placed fourth in the women’s race in a personal-best 2:19.18. Kristina Knowles finished right on Nolen’s heels in 2:19.56 to place sixth.
Mario Burke followed on the track with one of the top performances of the day in the 100-meter dash. Burke clocked the 16th-fastest time in the NCAA this season in the 100, when he crossed the line in a wind-aided 10.28 to finish second overall and first among collegiate competitors.
In the women’s 100, the Cougars picked up a pair of top-10 finishes. Essance Sample crossed the line in eighth after running 11.93, while Samiyah Samuels set a personal-best with a time of 11.96 to place ninth.
Senior Tonye’cia Burks earned a top-3 finish in the field for Houston with her performance in the women’s triple jump. Burks used her second leap of the competition to travel 41-7.25 (12.67m) to finish third.
The Houston Women closed the meet with a second-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay. The Cougars won the opening heat in a season-best 3:41.07.
