Berkeley, Calif. - The University of Houston men's and women's track and field teams won 10 individual events and two relay races at the California Golden Bear Invitational on Saturday, April 16.

Junior Keisha Howard led Houston's efforts with victories in the women's 200 and 400-meter dashes and qualified to compete in the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships in both events. Howard won the 200 meters with a career-best time of 23.89 seconds. She also won the 400 meters with a season-best time of 53.93 seconds.

Veronica Ramirez won the women's 1500-meter race with a time of 10:15.88, while Jennifer Hunt was the runner-up in the 800 meters with a time of 2:10.95. LaDedra Guy was the runner-up in the 100-meter dash with a NCAA Regional qualifying time of 11.72 seconds.

Hunt teamed with Alicia Cave, Jennifer Harper and Cheryl Garner to win the women's 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:46.57. Cave also was the runner-up in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.81 seconds.

Caresir Hamilton won the women's triple jump with a leap of 12.56 meters and was the runner-up in the high jump after clearing 1.70 meters. Tinisha Wesley also qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships in the shot put when she finished in fourth place with a mark of 14.45 meters.

Preston Perry won the 200-meter dash with a NCAA qualifying time of 20.97 seconds. Perry, who has the 13th-fastest time in the 100 meters, also finished third in that event with a legal time of 10.61 seconds.

 

 

Carey LaCour, who entered the meet with the nation's fourth-fastest time in the 200 meters, qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships and won the 400-meters with a time of 47.00 seconds.

LaCour and Perry also combined with Kolee Latson and Termaine Smith to win the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:09.26.

Senior Andrew Carruthers won the men's 400-meter hurdles and qualified for the NCAA Midwest Regional with a time of 51.38 seconds, and was the runner-up in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.05 seconds. Milton Manson also was a NCAA Midwest Regional qualifier in the 110-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 14.33 seconds.

Sophomore Tristian Whitley won the men's high jump and equaled his career-best jump after clearing 2.20 meters as he edged David Glasgow of California and his teammate Ivan Diggs, who both cleared 2.10 meters. Diggs' jump qualified him to compete in the NCAA Regional.

Tom Rusteberg also won the men's pole vault after clearing 5.05 meters, as he edged teammate Ron Veillon, who was the runner-up after clearing 4.75 meters.

Brandon Bray won the long jump after he equaled his career-best jump and qualified for the NCAA Regional with a leap of 7.42 meters.

Jonathan Reeves also qualified for the NCAA Regional in the men's shot put with a throw of 16.94 meters. Reeves, who already qualified for the NCAA Regional in the discus, finished eighth in that event.

Houston travels to Baton Rouge, La. next Friday and Saturday, April 22-23, and will compete in the LSU Alumni Gold Invitational.
