Flax Leads Decathlon After Day One of C-USA Outdoor Championships

HOUSTON-- The 2007 Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships kicked of Thursday at the Wendel D. Ley Track on the campus of Rice University. Thursday consisted of the first day of the heptathlon and decathlon competitions, the men and women's hammer throw and the 10,000-meter run. Through five events in the decathlon junior Jarrett Flax leads the way with 3,582 points. In a close second is teammate sophomore Morgan Floyd with 3,544 points. Freshman Wesley Bray sits in fourth place (3,414 pts.) and senior Nick Garza is in eighth (2,820 pts.). The men will complete the decathlon on Friday morning beginning at 9:30 a.m. with the 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500-meter run. On the women's side freshman Brittani Williams is in fourth place with 2,858 points. Through four events she trails the leader, Gaelle Niare's (SMU) 3,524 points. The heptathlon will conclude Friday at with the long jump, javelin, and 800-meter run beginning at 10 a.m. Freshman Ashley Bryant finished 16th in the women's hammer throw with a throw of 42.12m/138-02". Lightning has delayed the men's hammer throw and the 10,000-meter run. The men's hammer throw will be delayed until 12:30 p.m. Friday, while the men's 10,000 meter race will start at 7:45 a.m., followed by the women's race at 8:30 a.m. Friday's field events are set to start at 3 p.m. with the prelims of the running events starting at 5:45 p.m. Saturday's competition will conclude the championships with the running event finals the second half of the field events.
