Cougars Stand In Fourth Following First Day at Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships

Houston, Texas - Cole Dailey, Jarrett Flax and Ron Veillon combined to score 12 points in the first three events and the University of Houston men's track and field team is in fourth place following the first day of the Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The Cougars enter Friday's full day of competition looking to win a C-USA triple crown after winning the Conference USA men's cross country and indoor track and field championships earlier this year. Dailey had a fourth-place finish in the men's 10,000-meter run with a time of 31:51.42. Wesley Korir of Louisville won the race in 30:53.32 to score 10 points for Louisville. The Cardinals also gained six more points when Tim Kaiser had a third-place finish with a time of 31:44.59. Edwin Schlichter of East Carolina was the runner-up in the race with a time of 31:32.t68. Flax and Veillon combined to score seven points for the Cougars in the men's javelin throw. Flax had a fifth place finish with a throw of 177' 8" (54.16 meters) and Veillon finished is sixth place with a throw of 176'6" (53.79 meters). Flax, Veillon and Nicholas Garza look to score addition points for Houston when the men's decathlon concludes on Friday. Garza stands in second place through the first five events with 3,692 points. He trails the leader, Jimmy Mount of Cincinnati, by nine points. Mount finished the first five events with 3,701 points. Flax stands in sixth place with 3,499 points, while Veillon is in seventh place with 3, 441 points. Garza scored 834 points in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.12 seconds. He also had 783 points in the long jump with a leap of 6.87 seconds, and 723 points in the high jump after clearing 1.91 meters. He ended the day scoring 828 points after posting a time of 49.70 seconds in the 400-meter dash.
Flax had his best showing in the first event of the day, the 100-meter dash, with a time of 11.41 seconds for 771 points. He also scored 749 points in the high jump after clearing 1.94 meters (6-4.25) to score 749 points. Veillon had the fastest time in the 100-meter dash with 10.91 seconds for 881 points. He also scored 632 points in the long jump with a leap of 6.32 meters, and ended the day with a time of 51.09 seconds in the 400-meter dash to score 765 points. In the men's hammer, East Carolina's Eric Frasure, Terrance Myers and Mayso Porch combined for 21 points to give the Pirates the team lead after the first day. Frasure won the event with a throw of 201' 9" (61.50 meters), while Myers finished as the runner-up with a throw of 191' 1" (58.25 meters), and Porch finished in sixth place with 163'3" (49.75 meters). Marquette stands in second place with 17 points, while Louisville is in third place with 16 points, four points ahead of the Cougars. In the women's division, seniors Krystal Ward and Shayla Bowman scored three points each for the Lady Cougars, who are in a three-way tie for seventh place after the first day with six points. Ward had a sixth-place throw in the javelin with 131'1" (39.96 meters), while Bowman also registered a sixth-place finish in the women's hammer with a throw of 159'5" (48.59 meters). Ward also took the lead in the women's heptathlon after she posted career best in two events to score 3,369 points through four events. She began the day with a career-best time of 14.12 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles to score 912 points. Then, she scored 978 points in the high jump after clearing a personal best height of 1.80 meters (5-10.75). She also had a mark of 11.86 meters (38-11) in the shot put for 652 points, and a time of 25.66 seconds in the 200 meters for 827 points. Houston's other heptathlete, Nichole Brundage, ended the first day in ninth place with 2,760 points. She is 39 points in back of Erin Harris of UAB, who had the eighth-highest point total with 2,799. Ward is ahead of Ashley Wilhelm of Cincinnati by 311 points. Wilhelm finished the day with 3,058 points, and Camilla Hatlen of Tulane stands in first place with 2,999 points. Southern Miss took the early lead in the women's team standings with 20 points through the first three events. Cincinnati is in second place with 18 points, and USF is in third place with 17. |
