Bowman Finishes Third In The Women's Hammer Throw At Conference USA Track and Field Championships

Louisville, Ky. - Junior Shayla Bowman scored the first six points for the University of Houston women's track and field team when she registered a third-place finish in the women's hammer at the Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

"It wasn't my best effort, but I sat out a month and it has been more difficult for me to come back than I thought," Bowman said. "I am just happy that I could score some points for my team."

South Florida's Dayana Octavian won her second straight championship in the women's hammer and broke her own C-USA record with a season-best throw of 209'10" (63.97 meters). She easily outdistanced the runner-up Jo Young of Cincinnati, who was the runner-up with a throw of 171'5" (52.26 meters), while Bowman had a throw of 162'5" (49.51 meters). Emily Kost of Louisville had a throw of 157'3" (47.94 meters) to finish in fourth place, while South Florida's Chandra Brewer had a sixth-place finish with a throw of 157'3".

"Dayana is not that intimidating before the meet starts, but once she steps into the ring you know your work is cut out for you," Bowman added. "You have to concentrate and focus try to do your best. If you try to measure up to her, you are not going to be very successful."

Cincinnati's Ruth Limo also won her second straight Conference USA championship in the women's 10,000-meter run with a time of 36:38.86. Christa Benton of South Florida finished in second place with a time of 36:56.40, and Johanna Allen of East Carolina was third with a time of 37:17.90.

South Florida ended the day with 22 points to take the early lead in the women's team standings through the first day. Cincinnati is in second place with 21 points, while Houston, Marquette and East Carolina are tied for third place with six points each.

In the men's division, Louisville scored 27 points in the first two events to take the lead in the team standings through the first two events. Marquette is in second place with 12 points and DePaul scored 11 points for third place.

 

 

Houston's Cole Dailey had an 10th-place finish in his first 10,000 meter run of the season with a time of 33:15.51 Brent Des Roches of Marquette was the 10,000-meter champion with a time of 30:58.01. Ed Schlichter of Charlotte was the runner-up with a time of 31:11.99 and Wes Seacat of Louisville finished third with a time of 31:37.33.

Jarrod Jahnke of DePaul won the men's hammer throw with a time of 195'2" (59.49 meters). Joe Swiderski of Louisville edged his teammate, Arthur Turland for second place. Swiderski had a throw of 172'10" (52.67 meters), while Turland recorded a mark of 172'8" (52.62 meters). Josh Brannen of Louisville finished in fourth place with a throw of 167'8" (51.10 meters).

Houston All-American Krystal Ward ended the first day as the leader in the women's heptathlon with 3,083 points through the first four events.

Judy Shepherd of UAB ended the first day in second place with 3,051 points and Victoria Crawford of Memphis is third with 3,018 points, and Ashley Wilhelm of Cincinnati is in fourth place with 3,016 points. Kelly Faber of Louisville stands in fifth place with 2,902 points, while Houston's other competitor in the heptathlon, Nichole Brundage stands in 11th place with 2,753 points.

Shepherd took the early lead after one event in the heptathlon when she scored 946 points in the women's 100-meter hurdles with a wind-aided time of 14.23 seconds. Faber had the second-fastest time with a wind-aided 14.45 seconds for 916 points. Ashley Wilhelm of Cincinnati had the third-fastest time with a wind-aided 14.87 seconds for 859 points, while Ward scored 858 points with a time of 14.88 seconds.

Crawford had the best mark in the high jump after clearing 5'7"(1.70 meters) for 855 points. Ward scored 783 points after clearing 5'4½" (1.64 meters). Brundage also cleared 5 feet, 5¾ inches (1.67 meters) to score 818 points.

Ward took the overall lead in the women's shot put when she scored 648 points with a throw of 38' 8¾" (11.80 meters). She ended the first day scoring 794 points in the 200-meter dash with a wind-aided time of 26.04 seconds.

The final three events in the heptathlon are the long jump, javelin throw and 800-meter run and will be completed Friday morning.

Chris Wineberg of Cincinnati took the early lead in the men's decathlon after scoring 3,840 points through the first five events. Reagan Barry of Charlotte stands in second place with 3,674 points, while Cincinnati's Ben Haber is third with 3,586 points and Nick Newton of Marquette stands in fourth place with 3,541 points. Brad Bailey of Charlotte is in fifth place with 3,430 points and Houston's Eric Matcek stands in sixth place with 3,367 points.

Barry took the early lead with 865 points in the 100-meter dash with a wind-aided time of 10.98 seconds. Wineberg scored 843 points with a wind-aided time of 11.08 seconds. Matcek scored 799 points with a wind-aided time of 11.28 seconds and was in sixth place through the first event.

Barry also scored 723 points in the long jump with a leap of 21'8 ¼", and was just ahead of Wineberg and Nick Newton of Marquette, who both had a mark of 21'8".

Wineberg took the overall lead in the shot put with 670 points after a mark of 42'9¾" (13.05 meters). He also scored 740 points in the high jump after clearing 6'4" and finished the day with 867 points after recording a time of 48.87 seconds in the 400 meters.

Matcek scored 675 points in the long jump with a leap of 21'. He netted 606 points in the shot put with a mark of 39' 4½". Matcek scored 560 points in the high jump after clearing 5'7 ¾" and finished the day with 727 points with a time of 51.95 seconds in the 400-meter run.

The final five events in the decathlon will be the 110-meter hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and the 1,500-meter run.
