Final Stats

The University of Houston women's track and field team edged TCU by one point to win the Conference USA Women's Outdoor Track and Field championship. The Lady Cougars finished the meet with 121 points, while the Horned Frogs was the runner-up with 120 points. South Florida finished in third with 103.33 points, while Southern Miss finished in fourth with 78.83 points.

"I am exhausted," Houston head coach Leroy Burrell. "Coming into the meet, I wasn't sure we could pull this off because we have such a young team. But, Alicia Cave, LaDedra Guy and Krystal Ward solidified our efforts. We also had a strong performance in the throwing events as well."

In the men's division, Houston finished as the runner-up in the men's team race with 120 points. Cincinnati won the men's championships with 159.50 points and TCU was third with 117 points.

"I was proud of how our men's team competed," Burrell said. "This is a lot different from the (Conference USA Indoor Championships) when we ran away with the title. Cincinnati was not there and they put a lot of pressure on us all weekend. Every time I looked up to see how we did, I would notice them just ahead of us."

"Not having (Defending Conference USA defending decathlon champion) Ron Veillon in the decathlon really hindered our efforts," Burrell added. "We have got some things to improve upon, but I was happy with how we competed."

Burrell was named the C-USA Women's Outdoor Track and Field Coach-of-the-Year. Cincinnati's Bill Schnier was named the C-USA Men's Outdoor Track and Field Coach-of-the-Year.

TCU won the women's 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:39.85. South Florida passed Houston on the final leg and finished with a time of 3:40.40 and Houston was third in 3:41.83.

Houston's women's 4x100-meter relay team of Keisha Howard, Alicia Cave, Lisa Wilson and LaDedra Guy began the running events with a second-place finish in a time of 45.51 seconds. Southern Miss was the surprise winner with a time of 45.21 seconds and TCU finished in third place with a time of 45.65 seconds.

Guy was named the C-USA Women's Freshman-of-the-Year after winning the 100 meters and finishing second in the 200 meters.

She pulled a major upset in the 100-meter dash when she beat Donita Harmon by one-hundredth of a second. Guy tied the Conference USA record with a time of 11.45 seconds and Harmon was the runner-up in 11.46 seconds. Houston's Lisa Wilson also finished in fourth place with a time of 11.77 seconds.

"I was real relaxed coming into the race," Guy said. "Then, I felt stronger and had a better kick at the end the race. I have never felt like I had that strong of a kick before. We knew coming into the meet it was going to come down to one spot in a race or a mark in the field events. That's exactly what happened."

Harmon came back to edge Guy in the 200 meters. Harmon had a time of 23.14 seconds, while Guy finished in 23.55 seconds. Keisha Howard also finished eighth in the race with a time of 24.65 seconds.

"I was running well, but I tightened up coming out of the curve," Guy said. "She passed me at that point and I couldn't catch her in the straightway."

Cave also had a second-place finish in the women's 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.46 seconds. MaKeatha Cooper of TCU won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.37 seconds. Houston's Jaketa West finished in sixth place with a time of 14.38 seconds.

Howard was the runner-up in the women's 400-meter dash with a time of 54.75 seconds, while Renee Clarke finished in sixth place with a time of 55.77 seconds.

The Cougars also finished second in the men's 4x100-meter relay as Stanford Routt, Preston Perry, Brandon Womack and Carey LaCour combined for a time of 40.53 seconds. TCU won the event with a time of 40.10 seconds and Cincinnati was third in 40.60 seconds.

Routt had a third-place finish in the men's 100-meter dash behind TCU's Michael Frater and Jabari Fields. Frater won the race in 10.20 seconds, while Fields had a time of 10.27 seconds and Routt had a time with 10.39 seconds. Brandon Womack had a time of 10.53 seconds to finish in sixth place and Preston Perry had an eighth-place finish with a time of 10.63 seconds.

Fields edged Routt at the tape to win the 200 meters as Field won the race in 20.54 seconds and Routt finished second with a time of 20.60 seconds. Houston's Carey LaCour finished in fourth place with a time of 20.99 seconds.

Sesar Figueroa had a second-place finish in the men's 1500-meter run with a time of 3:52.40 and Alex Winstel finished in ninth place with a time of 3:57.43.

Andrew Carruthers was the runner-up in both the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles to Cincinnati's David Payne. Payne edged Carruthers in the 400-meter hurdles when Carruthers stumbled over the final hurdle in the race. Payne finished the race in 51.20 seconds while Carruthers had a time of 51.83 seconds.

Payne and Gaute Myklebust of Memphis were named the C-USA Men's Outdoor Athletes-of-the-Year. Myklebust won the men's shot put and discus throw.

South Florida's Dayana Octavian was selected the C-USA Women's Outdoor Athlete-of-the-Year after setting meet records in the hammer and discus throws. She also was the runner-up in the women's shot put behind teammate Chandra Brewer.

Wes Seacat of Louisville was named the C-USA Men's Freshman-of-the-Year after finished in third place in the 10,000-meter dash and fourth place in the 5,000-meter dash.

In the 110-meter hurdles, Payne had a winning time of 13.68 seconds and Carruthers finished with a time of 13.97 seconds. Milton Manson also had a time of 14.45 seconds to finish in fourth place.

Freshman Carey LaCour had a third place finish in the 400 meters with a time of 46.62 seconds. TCU's Jerry Harris won the race with a time of 45.76 seconds as he finished ahead of teammate Brett Wilson, who had a time of 46.45 seconds.

Maurillio Sanchez had an eighth-place finish in the men's 5,000-meter race with a time of 15:02.95. Figueroa finished in 10th place with a time of 15:07.62

Houston opened the day scoring 10 points in the men's discus throw after Derek Randall finished in third place and Johnathan Reeves finished in fifth place. Randall had a throw of 160'6" (48.93 meters) and Reeves had a mark of 150'10" (45.97). Gaute Myklebust of Memphis won the event with a throw of 185'7" (56.56 meters) and Arthur Turland of Louisville was the runner-up with a throw of 161'10" (49.33 meters).

Jason Edwards had a fifth place finish in the men's long jump with a leap of 23' ¾" (7.03 meters) to score four points for the Cougars. Brandon Womack added another point with a jump of 22'6½" (6.87 meters) to finish in eighth place.

Daniel Patton and Tom Rusteberg had a fifth and sixth place finish, respectively, in the men's pole vault after clearing 15'11" (4.85 meters).
