Krokey Leads Track and Field Through First Day of C-USA Championships

EL PASO, Texas -- Competing in just his first Conference USA Outdoor Championships, freshman William Krokey set a school record in the hammer throw to lead the University of Houston track and field team through the first day of the 2008 meet. Krokey set the record with a toss of 57.55m (188-10), eclipsing the old mark by more than nine meters. His effort earned him a fourth place finish in the event. Also competing for the Cougars was sophomore Brandon Hubbard, who finished in sixth with a toss of 52.21m (171-03). After the first five events of the decathlon, sophomore Wesley Bray sits atop the leader board with a total of 3,967 points. Bray finished in the Top Four in the 100m, 400m, long jump, high jump and shot put. Competition in the multi events will wrap-up on Friday, starting with the decathlon at 9 a.m. and the heptathlon at 9:30 a.m. Running events also will get underway tomorrow beginning at 5:30 p.m. A majority of the races tomorrow will be preliminaries, setting the stage for Saturday's finals. After the first day, the men currently sit in fourth place with 8 points, trailing UTEP's 32 points. The women have yet to score, with most of the team's athletes still to compete.
