Bray Grabs Gold to Lead Track and Field Through Day 2 of C-USA Championships

EL PASO, Texas Sophomore Wesley Bray grabbed gold in the men's decathlon to lead the University of Houston track and field team through the second day of the 2008 Conference USA Outdoor Championships at Kidd Field in El Paso. In all, the Cougars netted four medals on Friday.

Bray scored a total of 6,904 points, narrowly beating out Rice's Phillip Adam's 6,756 points to take his first career C-USA Championship.

Freshmen Chris Carter and Thomas Lang led five Cougars competing in the long jump, taking silver and bronze, respectively. Carter cleared 7.15m (23-05.50), while Lang finished with a mark of 7.12m (23-04.50). Both set personal bests in the event.

Junior Morgan Floyd finished with a bronze in the men's javelin, setting a season-best with a mark of 60.46m (198-04).

After the first two days of competition, the men currently sit in third place with 48 points, trailing UTEP (70) and Memphis (52). The women are in eighth place with 21.50 points behind Rice (65) and Memphis (46).

Sophomore Brittani Williams finished in fourth in the women's javelin with a mark of 40.96m (134-04).

In the women's long jump, sophomore Quin'shundolyn McPherson finished with a long of 5.94m (19-06.00), good for a fourth-place finish. Teammate junior Dayo Ogunniyi took seventh with a mark of 5.79m (19-00.00).

In the high jump, freshman Laura Allred leapt to a fifth place finish with a mark of 1.65m (5-05.00).

Freshmen Morgan Lancaster and Shannon Arnold both cleared 3.40m (11-01.75) in the pole vault to score for UH.

In the shot put, freshman Kiara Pulliam finished in seventh place with a toss of 13.82m (45-04.25). Also competing for the women was freshman Charlissa Foster, who finished in tenth with a mark of 13.27m (43-06.50).

For the men, freshman Sidney Flores finished eighth with a best of 14.76m (48-05.25) on the day. Fellow freshman Michael Sanchez was ninth with a season-best mark of 14.56m (47-09.25).

The majority of Friday's running events were prelims leading up to Saturday's finals.

Junior Seun Adigun will be the top seeded runner in the women's 100-meter hurdles competition, running the fastest time in prelims with a clocking of 13.60.

Sophomores Steven Jones (14.63) and Darryl Cloud (15.20) both qualified for the 110-meter hurdles final.

In the 400-meter dash, freshman Kalyn Floyd and McPherson will both race in Satruday's final, after clocking times of 55.53 and 55.75, respectively. McPherson's time was a season best. For the men, freshman Lazarus Crumedy also qualified with a time of 48.85.

Senior Tremaine Smith led three Cougars in qualifying for the 100-meter dash final. Smith won the second heat with a time of 10.60. Also competing were freshmen Tyrone Carrier (10.81) and Ed Turner (11.03).

For the women, Christi Jones qualified in the 100m with a time of 12.11.

Smith also notched the fastest preliminary clocking in the 200-meters with a mark of 21.02, earning the top seed in the final. Carrier also qualified with a time of 21.52. For the women, Floyd and McPherson both qualified to race on Saturday.

Currently the C-USA leader in the 400-meter hurdles, sophomore Jason Perez turned in the fastest time in the prelims with a mark of 53.55. Also qualifying for the Cougars was Cloud (54.87) and Emanuel Osadeby (55.04), who set a season-best with his time.

C-USA All-Conference honors are awarded to the top three finishers in each event. The individual champions are named to the first team, while second-place finishers are awarded second team honors and the third team is comprised of bronze medalist.

Saturday's championship races start at 5 p.m., while the finals for the men's and women's discus and triple jump and men's high jump and pole vault will take place earlier that afternoon.

All session championship tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for youth, while single session tickets are $10 and $5. C-USA students with a valid I.D. are admitted free, while adult military personal are admitted for $7 and youth military for $4. Tickets are available by calling (915) 747-5234.
