Smith Grabs 3 Medals To Lead Track and Field on Final Day of C-USA Championships

C-USA Outdoor Championships Day 3 Results in PDF Format
EL PASO, Texas -- Senior Tremaine Smith pocketed a team-high three medals, including gold in the men's 100-meter dash, to lead the University of Houston track and field team as the 2008 Conference USA Outdoor Championships wrapped up on Saturday at Kidd Field in El Paso, Texas. In all, the Cougars won 11 medals on the final day of competition. Smith led the men's team to a second place finish with 154.50 points, trailing only UTEP's 171 points. The Cougar women finished in seventh with 51.50 points. Smith grabbed gold in the 100-meter dash, finishing with a season-best time of 10.42. It was Smith's first career C-USA Outdoor Championship. The Houston native then went on to win silver in the 200-meter dash, clocking a mark of 21.00, and as a member of the 4X400-meter relay team, joining senior Dominic Milton, freshman Tyrone Carrier and sophomore Jason Perez. Currently C-USA's top-performer in the 400-meter hurdles, Perez won gold for the Cougars with a mark of 52.39 in the event. Sophomore Darryl Cloud finished in second, winning silver with a time of 53.22. Junior Seun Adigun won a pair of silver medals to lead the Cougar women. Adigun finished second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.50. She also joined sophomore Dayo Ogunniyi, freshman Kalyn Floyd and junior Quin'shundolyn McPherson as Houston took second in the 4X100-meter relay with a time 45.30. Sophomore Alex Bentley won silver in the men's pole vault competition. The 2007 Conference Champion, Bentley cleared 5.05m (16-06.75) to finish second. Carrier notched a silver medal finish in the 100-meter dash, as the Cougars swept the top two places in the final. Carrier finished with a mark of 10.48, setting a regional qualifying mark in the event. He also finished in fifth in the 200m with a time of 21.51. In the triple jump, freshman Chris Carter won bronze with a personal record leap of 15.69m (51-05.75). Also winning bronze was sophomore Steven Jones, who finished in third in the 110-meter hurdles, clocking a season-best time of 14.33. Freshman Charlissa Foster finished fourth in the women's discus, throwing to a personal best mark of 47.41m (155-06). For the men, sophomore Brandon Hubbard led five Cougars in the discus, finishing fifth with a mark of 47.09m (154-06). Freshman Michael Sanchez finished seventh with a personal best of 46.40m (152-03). Also competing were freshmen Sidney Flores (44.31m), William Krokey (41.27m) and John Patterson (38.55m). In other field events, freshman Thomas Lang finished sixth in the men's high jump, clearing 1.95m (6-04.75). Senior Caresir Hamilton finished 11th in the triple jump with a long of 12.25m (40-02.25). Also competing in the pole vault, freshmen Derek Schutz and Bryan Brown finished fifth and seventh, respectively. Brown cleared a season best 4.30m (14-01.25). The Cougars will have a week off to prepare for the upcoming NCAA Midwest Regional, hosted by the University of Nebraska in Lincoln on May 30-31.
