Track and Field's Adigun, Perez Advance to Finals at NCAA Midwest Regional

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Sophomore Jason Perez and Junior Seun Adigun both advanced to Saturday's finals at the 2008 NCAA Midwest Regional on Friday in Lincoln, Neb.

The reigning Conference USA 400-meter hurdles champion, Perez posted a time of 50.26 to finish in fifth in the prelims.

Adigun, who took silver in the 100-meter hurdles at the C-USA Championships, qualified for the finals on Saturday with a mark of 13.50.

Also qualifying was freshman Tyrone Carrier, finishing sixth in the 200-meter dash prelims with a clocking of 20.75. Senior Tremaine Smith also competed, posting a time of 21.02.

Carrier and Smith also ran the 100-meter dash, finishing in 13th and 15th and marks of 10.55 and 10.56, respectively.

In relay action, the women's team of junior Dayo Ogunniyi, freshman Kalyn Floyd, sophomore Quin'shundolyn McPherson and Adigun finished fifth with a mark of 44.69 to qualify for Saturday's final.

For the men, the 4X100m team of Carrier, freshman Ed Turner, freshman Steven Jones and Smith finished in sixth place with a clocking of 40.08 to qualify for the final.

Competing in her first NCAA regional meet, Floyd also finished 12th in the women's 200-meter with time of 23.62.

In the field events, Ogunniyi cleared 5.77m (18-11.25) in the long jump, while teammate McPherson cleared 5.71m (18-09.00).

Sophomore Ashley Bryant finished tenth in the discus with a throw of 48.63m (159-06).

Competition in the 2008 NCAA Midwest Regional will continue tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m. with the men's hammer throw and women's high jump. Finals in the running events will get under way at 1:30 p.m. with the 4X100-meter relay.

Following the Regional, athletes who qualify for the NCAA Championships will have two weeks to prepare for the meet , which will be held June 11-14 in Des Moines, Iowa.
