June 12, 2004 Austin, Texas- - For the second straight year, University of Houston junior sprinter Stanford Routt earned All-American honors at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. This season, Routt finished as the runner-up to Wallace Spearman of Arkansas after finishing in third place at the 2003 NCAA Outdoor meet. Spearman won the race with a wind-aided time of 20.12 seconds, while Routt finished in second place with a time of 20.20 seconds. Jabari Fields of TCU finished in third place with a time of 20.28 seconds and Arkansas' Tyson Gay finished in fourth place with a time of 20.39 seconds. Routt led the race coming out of the turn and was closely followed by Fields. In the straightaway, Spearman was able to catch them in the final 30 meters of the race to edge Routt. Gay had the fastest time in the preliminary heats, but got out of the blocks slowly and never challenged the top three finishers. This marked the first time all season Spearman finished ahead of Gay in a sprint race.
