Tremaine Smith Wins 200-Meter Dash At USA Junior Championships

Carson, Calif. - University of Houston freshmen Tremaine Smith and Scott Duckworth registered career-best performances in the men's 200-meter dash and pole vault at the USA Junior National Championships on Friday, June 24. Smith won the 200-meters with a time of 20.86 seconds after earning All-American honors as a member of Houston's 4x100-meter relay team that finished in eighth place a the NCAA Championships. He registered a fourth-place finish in the 200 meters at the Conference USA Championships with his previous best time of 20.97 seconds. Duckworth registered a fourth-place finish in the men's pole vault after clearing five meters (16' 4 ½" at the USA Junior Championships at Carson, Calif. Earlier this season, he cleared 4.90 meters (16' ¾") and finished in fourth place at the Conference USA Championships. Another freshman Kolee Latson also qualified for the finals in the men's 400-meter dash at the USA Junior meet with a time of 47.39 seconds, which was the sixth-fastest overall time in the preliminary rounds. Latson had a third-place finish at the Conference USA Outdoor meet earlier this year with a career-best time of 47.09 seconds. Keisha Howard also qualified for the women's 400-meter championships at the USA Outdoor Championships with a time of 53.70 seconds. Howard was the C-USA Champion in the women's 400-meter dash with a career-best time of 52.11.
