OTTAWA -- Houston Cougar Track & Field student-athletes Jared Kerr and Nathaniel Mechler advanced to the final round of the men's long jump at the Canada National Track & Field Championships on Thursday, in Ottawa.
Kerr and Mechler each entered Thursday's preliminary round with wind-legal marks under the necessary standard of 24-3.5 (7.40m) to automatically qualify for the finals, meaning they would have three attempts to finish within the top-4 of the field and book a spot in Friday's final round.
Kerr set the tone with his first attempt of the morning when he jumped 24-2.5 (7.38m), a mark that would prove to stand up as the top jump of the competition, and grab the first of four qualifying positions for Friday's final. Kerr would follow with marks of 23-11.0 (7.29m) and 23-8.0 (7.21m).
Mechler saw his first attempt travel 23-10.0 (7.26m) to place him second overall through the first round of jumps. After a foul on his second attempt, Mechler would improve to 23-11.0 (7.29m) on his final jump to finish with the third-highest mark and earn a finals berth.
The duo will be back in action at 6 p.m. CT, Friday for the final round, while Kerr will also compete in the finals of the men's triple jump at 6 p.m., Saturday.
Kerr provided a top wind-legal mark in the triple jump in his final attempt at the American Athletic Conference Championships when he leapt 51-3.0 (15.62m). His top wind-aided mark of 51-9.0 (15.77m) earned him the gold medal at the championships in his first time ever competing in the event. His mark earned him an automatic bid into the finals.
