Cougars Wrap Long Jump in Canada

OTTAWA -- Houston Cougar Track & Field student-athletes Jared Kerr and Nathaniel Mechler wrapped competition in the long jump at the Canadian Track & Field Championships on Friday, in Ottawa.

Kerr and Mechler qualified for the finals by finishing first and third, respectively, in the first round on Thursday. Kerr set the tone with his first attempt of the morning when he jumped 24-2.5 (7.38m), a mark that would prove to stand up as the top jump of the round. Mechler saw his final attempt travel 23-11.0 (7.29m) to place him third overall in the prelims.

Kerr paced the pair with a ninth-place finish after posting a top mark of 23-1.25 (7.04m) on his first attempt. The junior would follow with leaps of 21-11.5 (6.69m) and 22-6.5 (6.87m) to complete his competition. Kerr will return to action at 6 p.m., Saturday for the finals of the men's triple jump.

Mechler opened the competition with a leap of 22-4.5 (6.82m), which would be his top mark until the third round. In his final attempt, Mechler soared 23-1.25 (7.04m) to place himself 11th.

UPDATE: Kerr withdrew from the triple jump final on Saturday due to minor injury.
