Former University of Houston standout Starlie Graves finished in fifth place in the finals of the women's long jump at the USA Track and Field Olympic Trials in Sacramento, Calif. on Thursday, July 15. Graves, who competed at UH from 1992-94, recorded her best jump in the finals on her first try with a leap of 21'3½" (6.49 meters).

Marion Jones won the event with a legal jump of 23'4" (7.11m) on her second attempt in the finals. Grace Upshaw was the runner-up with a leap of 22'5" (6.83 meters) and Akiba McKinney finished in third place with a mark of 21'6¾" (6.57 meters). Rose Richmond finished in fourth place with a leap of 21-6¼" (6.56 meters).

Earlier in the meet, former Lady Cougar All-American Ifoma Jones finished seventh in the finals of the women's high jump after clearing 6'-½" (1.84 meters). Jones was a two-time All-American in the heptathlon and high jump in 1999 and won five Conference USA high jump and heptathlon championships from 1997-99.

Tisha Waller won the high jump with a clearance of 6'6" (1.98 meters), while Chaunte Howard of Georgia Tech was the runner-up after she cleared 6'4 ¾" (1.95 meters) and Amy Acuff was third at the same height.

The USA Olympic Track and Field Trials continue in Sacramento, Calif. through Sunday, July 18.

Cougar All-American Stanford Routt will begin competing in the men's 200-meter dash on Friday, July 16. Earlier this season, Routt was the runner-up in the 200 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships after finishing in third place at the 2003 NCAA Outdoor meet.

In addition, former Cougar All-American John Davis will compete in the men's discus Friday after competing in the preliminaries of the shot put earlier. Davis was a five-time All-American in the discus and shot put at the 1998 and 1999 NCAA Outdoor Championships. He also was named the Conference USA Athlete of the Year in 1997 after winning the discus, javelin and shot put. He won five other C-USA individual championships during his career.

 

 

Former Lady Cougar All-American Jenny Adams will compete in the women's 100-meter hurdles on Saturday. Adams was a NCAA long jump champion in 1999 and 2001. She was the NCAA runner-up in the 100-meter hurdles in 1999 and finished fourth in 1998. Adams was named the C-USA Athlete of the Year in 1997, 1998 and 2001. She also was the C-USA Freshman Athlete of the Year in 1997 and won 13 C-USA individual championships during her career.

The final rounds for men's 200-meter dash, men's discus and women's 100-meter hurdles are scheduled for Sunday.
