Burrell Takes Bronze at World University Games

TAIPEI – Senior sprinter Cameron Burrell earned Houston’s first medal of the World University Games after claiming bronze in the 100-meter dash on Thursday, in Taipei.

Burrell qualified for the finals of the 100m alongside alum LeShon Collins by running 10.30 and 10.31, respectively, in the morning’s semifinal races. After races of 10.43 and 10.42 in the first two rounds, Burrell improved for his top time of the meet, running 10.27 to cross the line in third and earn the bronze.

Collins crossed the finish line in 10.32 to place sixth.

On Wednesday, sophomore Samiyah Samuels became the first Cougar to reach a final in an event after jumping 19-11.5 (6.08m) in the long jump. On Thursday, Samuels returned to jump 20-3.0 (6.17m) to finish seventh overall.

Sophomore Birexus Hawkins completed her World University Games in the semifinals of the 400-meter dash on Thursday. Hawkins qualified for the semifinals with a mark on 57.14 on Wednesday and posted a time of 57.63 in the semifinal round to finish 21st.

In the throws, juniors Mikaila Martin and Taylor Scaife were each in action for the women’s hammer throw. Martin’s top throw traveled 172-11 (52.71m), while Scaife’s top mark landed 168-5 (51.34m) away to place the duo 18th and 19th, respectively.

The triple jump competition begins the third day of action at the World University Games, where senior Tonye’cia Burks will be in action at 8:20 p.m. CT, on Thursday. Burks will be followed by Tori Williams in the women’s 200-meter dash at 9:15 p.m. CT, and Jacarias Martin and Curtis Brown in the men’s 200 at 10:15 p.m. CT.

The semifinals of the men’s and women’s 200-meter dash will wrap the third day of action for the Cougars at 4:00 a.m., and 4:30 a.m. CT, on Friday, respectively.
