PROVIDENCE – Senior sprinter Cameron Burrell has been named the American Athletic Conference Track Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. The award for Burrell is his second track award and third overall this season.
Burrell opened competition at the Houston Invitational with the fastest overall time in the preliminaries at 6.67. In the semifinals, Burrell clocked the same time and entered the finals with the fourth fastest overall time in the event. The senior came up just shy of winning the final, falling to former teammate and Houston alum LeShon Collins who edged Burrell 6.634 to 6.637. The new mark for Burrell ranks him No. 7 in the NCAA according to TFRRS.org.
The award for Burrell is his second track athlete of the week honor this season after claiming the award on Jan. 17. The Houston, Texas, native was also named American Field Athlete of the Week on Jan. 10, for his performance in the long jump at the season-opening Reveille Invitational.
