Complete Rankings
HOUSTON – The University of Houston women’s track and field team debuted at No. 7 in the South Central Region rankings on Tuesday morning, it was announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Houston is the sole representative of Conference USA on the women’s side and is joined by only one other league member in the men’s poll – Memphis. In the region, the Cougars are ranked along side two Southeastern Conference teams and four Big 12 programs. Four of the six teams are nationally ranked in the Top 25, including No. 1 Texas A&M.
With only four meets completed so far this season, the women have earned three provisional marks, recorded eight all-time top-five performances in program history, claimed 12 event titles and set 14 personal records.
The Cougars look to continue their success as half of the team travels to New York, for the New Balance Invitational on Feb. 5-6, while the remainder of the team stays in Houston for the UH All-Comers Meet on Feb. 6.
About Regional Rankings
Using data collected by Track & Field Results Reporting System, each of the USTFCCCA’s nine award regions are scored as its own separate “championship” using current national-team ranking formulas. The regional team index is best used to find a team’s all-around strength, as it takes many athletes in many events to yield a high score, whereas the national-team rankings are taken in context with national championship where it takes a few very elite athletes to score well.
