HOUSTON – With the XXIII Winter Olympic Games right around the corner in Pyeongchang, South Korea, two of Houston’s all-time great Track & Field alumni, Seun Adigun and Ngozi Onwumere, are set to make history as the first winter Olympians from University of Houston.
The duo, alongside teammate Akuoma Omeoga, have already placed their name in the history books, after they became the first-ever delegation of Nigerian athletes to qualify for the Olympic Winter Games, and the first bobsled athletes from any African nation to reach the Olympiad.
Training for the women’s bobsled at the Pyeongchang Olympics is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. CST, on Saturday, Feb. 17. The team will run through two training sessions each day across Feb. 17-19, before competition begins with the first of two heats on Tuesday, Feb. 20. The final two heats of the women’s bobsled will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 21, beginning at 5:40 a.m. CST.
Adigun, who serves as the driver of the bobsled team, is no stranger to the Olympics, as she competed in the 100-meter hurdles for Nigeria during the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London. Adigun was also a 2009 All-American with the Cougars after a third place finish in the 100 hurdles at the NCAA Outdoor Championships and was a 6-time Conference USA Champion. Adigun also left a legacy with the Cougars as the program’s record holder in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.09.
Onwumere, who will serve as the alternate for the Nigerian bobsled team, was a 2-time All-American during her time with the Cougars. In 2013, Onwumere finished 21st in the 200-meter dash at the NCAA Championships, before she anchored the 4x100-meter relay squad to a 16th-place finish at the same meet.
