HOUSTON- Selected members of the University of Houston track and field team will head to Ames,Iowa to partake in the Last Chance Qualifying meet for the NCAA Indoor Championships on Saturday.
The NCAA abandoned the qualifying standards for the 2013 indoor competition. With no qualifying standards, the top-16 performers in each individual event and the top-12 relay teams in both the 4x400-meter relay and distance medley relay qualify for entry into the 2013 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Coming off a successful trip to the Conference USA Indoor Championships last weekend, senior sprinter Errol Nolanlooks to punch his ticket to the NCAA Championships. Nolan is currently ranked 20th nationally in the men's 400-meter dash with a time of 46.69, just .14 off from qualifying. Along with the 400m, Nolan will help the 11th-ranked men's 4x400 relay team improve on its time.
Conference USA 60-meterdash runner-up, freshman Leshon Collins, who is currently tied at 17 with three others, will attempt to run a personal best of 6.66 or better to qualify for the NCAA meet next weekend. Fellow freshman Isaac Williams looks to break the school record held by him and two others in the men's 60-meter hurdles by running a 7.80 or faster. Williams, who is sits at 21st with Syracuse's Amadou Gueye, tied the program best of 7.81 at Houston's own Leonard Hilton Memorial Invitational on Jan. 18.
For the women, senior sprinter Brittany Wallace will enter in the 400-meter dash, where she is currently ranked 48th with a personal best of 54.27. The Landsdowne, Pa. native, ran her personal record at last weekend's C-USA Championships, where she placed fourth.
A LOOK AHEAD
For those student-athletes or relay teams that qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships will travel to Fayetteville, Ark on March 8-9.
