Track and Field Heads Across Town To Compete In Victor Lopez Classic

HOUSTON - The University of Houston track and field team will head across town to Rice to compete in the annual Victor Lopez Classic at Holloway Field/Ley Track on Friday and Saturday. This will be the fourth consecutive year the Cougars have competed in the Classic.
This two-day meet will be scored between student-athletes from Houston, Dallas Baptist, Dillard, Harvard, Houston Baptist, Huston-Tillotson, Lamar, Louisiana Tech, McNeese State, Northeastern, Notre Dame, Prairie View A&M, Rice, Sam Houston State, St. John's, Stephen F. Austin, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas Lutheran, Texas Southern, Texas-Pan American, and Western Michigan. Scoring in the meet will be on a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis for all events with only three athletes per school eligible to score.
Friday's field events begin at 10 a.m. with the men's hammer throw, while the running events are slated to start at 7 p.m. with the men's 1,500-meter run. Day one of the meet is scheduled to finish at 9:50 p.m. with the women's 10,000-meter run. On Saturday, the Classic begins at 11 a.m., with the men's shot put and concluding with the women's 4x400 relay at 8:40 p.m.
At last year's meet, the Cougars claimed six event titles. For the women, Tai'shea Reese and Karley King topped the competition in the long jump and pole vault. Reese jumped a distance of 6.09m (19-11.75), while King cleared the bar at 3.85m (12-7.5). In the women's 60-meter hurdles, DeMeeka Jones placed first with a time of 13.49.
The Cougars swept the men's and women's 800-meter dash, as Anthony Coleman and Kathryn Ducommun both took home gold in the event. Coleman and Ducommun crossed the finish line at the 1:52.35 and 2:16.16, respectively.
