PREVIEW: Cougars split for Texas Relays, Rice Invite

HOUSTON - The University of Houston track and field team will split this weekend for the 87th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin and the Victor Lopez Classic hosted by Rice University.
The Cougars will face some tough competition as the nation and worlds best athletes travel to the prestigious event. Of the top 20 teams currently ranked, 12 will have student-athletes representing at the meet.
Student-athletes who met the qualification standards will compete at the Texas Relays starting Wednesday afternoon. Those who didn't will stay in Houston for Rice's home meet on Friday and Saturday.
Texas Relays begins Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. with the two-day multi-events competition. Senior Cassie Wiley will represent Houston in the women's heptathlon.
Thursday, individual events will begin at 12:30 p.m. with the women's hammer throw while the running events will start at 4:30 and 7:10 p.m. with an hour break in between.
The morning session of Friday's events kicks off at 9:35 a.m. with the 4x100m relay and the rest of the sprints preliminary rounds. Field events will begin around the same time with the women's javelin. Most of the section B jumps will be during the afternoon session.
Finals will begin Saturday at noon starting with the 4x200m relay. Athletes still in contention will compete on Saturday.

Some throwing events and the long distance heats will begin Friday evening. Saturday, the field events kick off at 11 a.m. with the men's shot put. Running events start at noon and will all be timed finals for section B. The section A portion of running events will start at 6 p.m.
