PROVIDENCE – Junior jumper Tonye’cia Burks has been named American Athletic Conference Field Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week after a record-setting performance at the Mt. SAC Relays, the league office announced Tuesday.
Competing in the invitational section of the triple jump, Burks broke her own school record en route to winning the event on Saturday. Her first attempt went 40-5.0 (12.32m) to qualify her for the finals. Burks improved slightly over the next four jumps before exploding for a leap of 44-4.75 (13.53m) on her final attempt.
The mark for Burks broke her previous program-best of 43-5.0 (13.23m), which she set earlier this season at the Victor Lopez Classic. The former Kilgore High School standout owns each of the indoor and outdoor records in the triple jump and has been named American Athlete of the Week three times this season (two outdoor, one indoor).
Houston has now won a combined 18 Track & Field Athlete of the Week Awards during the indoor and outdoor seasons. Burks and sophomore hurdler Amere Lattin each earned an award last week, marking four awards for Lattin in 2017.
Junior Cameron Cornelius has taken home a field award in each of the indoor and outdoor seasons, while Tori Williams has won three track awards this year (two indoor, one outdoor). Junior Cameron Burrell earned two track and one field awards during the indoor season, while Brian Barraza, Eli Hall and Samiyah Samuels have each earned the honor once.
