HOUSTON - Days after breaking a 16-year-old school record, junior Yonas Tesfai was selected the American Athletic Conference Male Track Athlete of the Week by conference officials Tuesday afternoon.
This is the third straight week a Houston student-athlete has been awarded the male track athlete of the week award and is the 13th weekly award for the Cougars this year.
Tesfai broke the 800-meter school record with a time of 1:48.40 to take first place at the J. Fred Duckett Twilight Meet Saturday evening at Rice University's Holloway Track/Ley Field. He broke the record previously set by Karim Alston (1:48.81) at the 1998 C-USA Championships in Tampa, Fla.
Tesfai continues to top the conference performance in the men's 800m and moves up to fourth in the West Region and No. 17 in the nation. He is one of the first two Cougars to break a school record this outdoor season and become the sixth Cougars to break a record this year.
